Re: Positioning gas cylinders?
Blind Pig, Biggest concern should be with something being dropped on a valve and it being sheared off. They should never be uncapped while laid down, it's just plain safer and smarter to stand them up out of harms way. They're not likely to end up in your neighbor's back yard if the valve gets shear...

Brian, Welcome to the forum. I think you're going to need more firewood for that wood stove if it stays like it was this morning, I had 20* on the car dash. We have a few others on here from around Pittsburgh. I'm from New Kensington area if you know where that is. Nice group of guys who are willing...

Tricklidz1, You're questions will lead to more questions than answers as you can already tell. In order to help you we will need a lot more information than you've provided and you'll need to be more specific in your questions. There are a million different questions about each type of base metal, f...

Re: Using a strong arm for box tubing question
Phog, Welcome to the forum. Everything you weld will distort. That's the simple answer. I've never used the 3rd axis clamps, but I would believe that if it's held rigid until it cools that it would distort less than it would unrestrained. Most people who have welded for awhile have learned to mitiga...

Re: 2 inch schedule 160 stainless cert practice
Steve, I did say that and with the Argon coming from a high pressure cylinder and going through a significant pressure drop, it has a significant temperature drop (i.e. frosted regulator with enough flow) compared to the static air already in the pipe. In a large vessel this temperature change will ...

Re: 2 inch schedule 160 stainless cert practice
Pyro, The suggestion to lower the flow was just to save gas. There are cases where too much flow can be a detriment, but probably not in your case. I don't think that you'll even recognize the cooling effect (97BTU @ 10CFH) in a coupon sized piece of pipe. I look at purging this way, I'm trying for ...

I tried to PM him to clear the whole name thing up, as he's referred to him as Jamie on other occasions but he still didn't get it. So I'll try the method that works best with my children, I'll raise my voice, which by the way doesn't happen often.

Pyro,
You can also leave a little more land and you should get less push through. Let your puddle only take the filler that it needs. don't push it into the puddle. Rick's right, get your ass moving once you start.
You're improving nicely, keep after it, you're not far off now.

Richard,
Another thing I'll add about the SSC is, I know it!s made in America. I'm usually not a stickler about that but if the price is reasonable for the quality I'll buy American made.

Blaze, You need to be suspect of bad gas any time you change cylinders and you start having problems after. I've explained in prior posts how this happens and it's likely you got a mislabeled or contaminated cylinder of gas. Return it your supplier and tell them that you believe you got bad gas. I'v...

Re: Tungsten Mystery
Blaze, Moisture in the gas adds the 2 things that you're most trying to keep out of the weld, Hydrogen and Oxygen. If you have a restriction in the gas flow and you're using a floating ball type flow meter it will not float for long at the set level before it drops off to the actual flow rate. There...

Richard,
I had an older version of the Miller pedal so I can't speak to that model but I bought the SSC a few years ago and I like it a lot. Much more than the old Miller one. Smooth.

Re: Pulse to no pulse...odd problem.
Kym, First off being a good fabricator is more dependent on being a good fitter than the actual welding part. Large gaps should be eliminated before the welder is turned on. If you can't close a gap in one pass you should change the way you're doing things. We've gone past that point though so now w...

I know nobody wants to throw away rod, but more than one person on this forum including my son have had nothing but problems with Alcotec rods in 5356. I would replace the rod with another brand first and if the WPS allows I would switch to 4943 Maxal.

Re: A picture is worth a thousand words
Gene, That looks a little better, but still not great. Have you leak checked your system? Check and or replace the o-ring on your back cap or swap the cap with another one. Check your system with soapy water, fill a balloon, there's quite a few post here with tips on checking for leaks. Put leaks in...

Re: A picture is worth a thousand words
Gene, As stated the wedge collets from CK worldwide basically eliminate that problem. I've used one for 3 years and welded many pipe joints that have overheated my torch to the point where I had to stop and let it cool and it's still like new. The twisted collet swell out against the sides of the co...

Re: A picture is worth a thousand words
Gene, You definitely have a gas issue. Have you refilled or switched out your cylinder lately? Check your collet and see if it's twisted, as this will restrict your flow on occasion. Have you been able to weld with this set up before today? Check your Argon system from the cylinder to the torch for ...

Re: A picture is worth a thousand words
Gene, I have a little test for you to see if this a gas issue or a bad tungsten issue. Take a piece of steel of any size and clean it shiny bright, no mill scale, clean bare metal, and light up on it until it puddles. Without moving your torch back off the pedal until it drops the arc and don't move...
