Re: Plasma issues

Mick, I only used that machine with a stand off guide and when you tried to cut sideways it cut intermittently. The tape is what we use to secure heat tracing to pipe, it's #27 Scotch tape from 3M. We buy it from Grainger I believe. You can get it in different widths and we use the 1/2 stuff. Len Se...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

Brian, While learning to weld we try to get our welds to look consistent and seems to be easier to do without adding filler. That only works for a small few things that require welding. Learning how to add the filler is a key part of tig welding. You need to pay close attention to the puddle forming ...

Re: Plasma issues

Mick, There's a very small micro switch in the handle that let the machine know the consumables are in place. I've had problems with it not making good contact so I wrapped a piece of fiberglass tape around the base of the piece that holds all the consumables, sorry, don't know it's proper name, and...

Re: Metal Prep question

Brian, Sandblasted metal needs no further prep unless you plan on putting a bevel on it. If it's sandblasted well enough to take rust and mill scale off, then there almost assuredly can't be anything left on the surface. Now unless this angle has lived it's life in an oil bucket I won't even conside...

OK, makes sense now. Not sure if they'll have green or not. I'm sure one of the local Airgas would have cable also, they're just never my first choice because they're out of my way.

Re: What Guage wire is this

Brian, Go to a local welding supply (West Penn Laco, Alloy Oxygen, Jackson Welding) and pick up some 1/0 stinger cable and be done with it. If you start welding Aluminum at the higher end of your machines range you'll be taxing the number 4 wire pretty good at 25 feet. A good heavy ground helps a lo...

Re: Yes, I have no rod oven - which rod to use?

Ken, I haven't had to buy my own rods In a very long time so I don't know the current prices, but if I remember right, the last time I bought a 10# can it was under $30 for 3/32 Lincoln Excalibur rods. I've never owned a rod oven and have used 7018 rods for years. I used to store them in a 4 gallon ...

Re: What is the right sized Torch Cable Cover?

The ones that I got have Velcro the full length. It wasn't as easy as I thought it would be to put it on. I'd suggest you have somewhere to stretch the hoses out or have someone keep them untangled as you go. I didn't do either and it was a PITA for sure. I haven't melted a zipper yet but my oldest ...

Brian,
I actually just got a 2 pack a couple of weeks ago and haven't even got to use them yet. I installed one and the other is still sitting on my workbench. Seems well made though for the price.

Greco Gas, in Tarentum. I found a guy on Ebay selling leather ones for less than I paid for the nylon one. I'll post his name later when I'm at my home computer.

I used to deliver Liquid Oxygen to Cannondale in Bedford,Pa., and one day I saw there line up at a local dealer out there, they are very nice. I glanced down at the price tag and suddenly forgot how to ride a bike. As you say, they were thousands, yikes. As a little side note, their sporting some ve...

With the ass beating only you get punished for bad behavior, the other, we all get punish...

I like these two pin vises for sharpening my tungsten. http://www.commandoproducts.com/drillhandlesandholders-large.aspx and the one from MicroMark tools, part #21104. You can buy either one online for about $10. The Commando Products one holds smaller tungsten in the handle and the MicroMark one fi...

Re: Anybody tried and arc pig??

I'm not sure how how it works, but I've welded with the HF on our old Trailblazer without a pedal, but it's been so long ago that I don't remember how the HF was initiated. If I remember right it was continuous until you turned it off at the welder, not fun, but it worked. Sent from my iPad using Ta...

Re: Need tips on pipe on a handrail!

Whit90, I usually don't give advise on Mig welding and probably should refrain now but I would weld the top and bottom as you have been and I would run the sides down hill. First thing I would do though is bevel the pipes and set a smallish gap, maybe 1/16 to 3/32. I'll probably get beat over the he...

Re: Edge melt - too slow?

Kym, When I have to weld thin tubing to thicker plate I usually start my puddle about 2 mm into the plate and place my filler in the joint where they meet. A slight weave will let the leading edge of the puddle draw the filler in as you progress. I always add the filler to the thin side as was menti...

Re: 6010 vs 6011

DCEN,
It runs smoother because the current is only flowing in one direction and never has to pass the "Zero" point where the current changes polarity while using AC. That's the simple answer.
