Reverse polarity or Electrode Positive is used for solid wire MIG (GMAW) welding with shielding gas. Straight polarity or Electrode Negative is used for self shielding flux core (FCAW). You would need to change the polarity when you change the wire type.

Re: Standard collet bodies - why?
Thanks ajlskater1, I suppose a larger collet body could dissipate more heat but I am not sure where it would dissipate it to. There will be a little more surface area to radiate heat or pass the heat to the shielding gas. The larger amount of copper would soak up a slug of heat initially but I suspe...

Re: What is this adjustment?
Thanks Steve S, By the size and bulk of this machine I would suspect is is a transformer, not an inverter. But I don't think it is that basic. There are some more adjustments on the main panel peeking out from behind the raised cover. I doubt that AC balance would be hidden behind the cover as it is...

Here is a picture from a somewhat dated welding text book. It looks like some sort of Miller machine. Perhaps an Aerowave(?) I have pulled several Miller manuals and have not found exactly what model it is. Can anyone tell me what the "High frequency adjuster" is for? hf.jpg Sorry if the i...

Re: Standard collet bodies - why?
Thanks for the great replies! I have considered the spatter issue. Usually just after welding something which I intentionally did not clean as well as I should and finding spatter on my gas lens  I try to remember to switch to a standard collet body for these sort of exercises. And as for reac...

Standard collet bodies - why?
I took a TIG course at the local Community College several years ago. Gas lens collet bodies were treated as something exotic, expensive and something they did not have except for a few random pieces of CK Worldwide gas savers which were in the junk box. When I purchased my Diversion 165 back in 200...

Re: TIG torch amp rating when using pulse
Well I had some coffee this AM and thought through my question a little more. The issue is dissipation of heat by the torch. The heat generated by the flow of current through the torch may be represented as: P=I^2 * R Where P is the power or heat, I is the current and R is the resistance of the torc...

TIG torch amp rating when using pulse
As an example, a WP9 family torch is rated at 125 amps DC (per the Weldcraft web site). If this torch is used on a pulse TIG power supply with the following settings: Pulse frequency 100 Hz Max amperage 200 amps Peak time 50% Background current 50 amps the AVERAGE current through the torch would be ...

Re: I was ALMOST a CK Worldwide fan
Are you trying to fit the flex head to a different torch body? Oh no. I simply disconnected the tail end of the CK torch from the power cable/hose and wished to connect a different torch to the power cable/hose. I contacted CK by email and they replied promptly. It seems that for some reason they c...

I was ALMOST a CK Worldwide fan
After watching Jody's video about the CK Worldwide Flex-Loc TIG torch I decided to purchase one. I found a good price at weldfabulous.com. The torch came with a SuperFlex cable. Wow is it flexible! And slippery. I tried to drape it over my forearm as I do with my old cable but it just slips off. Sti...

What is the advantage of a wedge collet?
I watched Jody's video yesterday about the CK Flex Lock torch. Really neat. While browsing the CK site I came across the parts list for these torches. Among the items listed was a "WEDGE" collet. Just wondering what the advantages are over a standard collet? TIA, Ken p.s. CK Worldwide will...

Re: Diversion 180 conversion
Glad to help. A couple of other things I might add... The Diversion torches are NOT REALLY hard wired. As discussed, the torch head and handle are easy to change. As to the other end of the cable... It is not connected externally as with most TIG power sources. But, if you pop the cover you will fin...

Re: Tungsten sharpening
The Hobart Easy TIG 165 is essentially the same as the Miller Diversion 165. It is an inverter type welder which produces square wave AC. Miller (part of the same conglomerate as Hobart) recommends 2% Ceriated tungsten for these machines. The general "rule" for tungsten and AC is to ball a...

Re: Diversion 180 conversion
I have a Diversion 165 which is basically the same as the 180 less a foot pedal, a dual voltage power plug and a digital readout. The machine end of the torch cable is "hard wired" to the power source. The business end is no problem to change torches. Have a look at these videos by John Sw...

Re: Diversion 165 - tungsten quesiton
Miller recommends Ceriated tungsten for the Diversion 165. The welder provides square wave AC 30% positive (for cleaning) and 70% negative (for penetration) at 120 Hz. I believe the 30/70 is the TIME ratio and that the amperage +/- is balanced but I could be wrong. That said, I have found it to be a...

Re: mig welder popping the hose off
Hi muzzytt, The hose should not be popping off. The regulator should only be supplying somewhere around 20 psi. It sounds like it is leaking through from the high pressure side. In other words a bad regulator. That said, a couple of other thoughts... If the regulator is "heated" it sounds ...

Hi Mike H,
I have used 10% CO2/90% Argon for spray transfer but have not tried it for short circuit transfer. Here is a detailed read on shielding gases which might provide some insight. http://www.weldreality.com/MIG_welding_gases.htm

Sorry about the late reply. I was browsing my Radnor catalog (a great reference if you can get one from Airgas/National Welders). Re: Is this a good welder?
The fitting on the end of the liner where it attaches to the welder is going to be machine specific. The other end is just an open tube. The liner will probably be longer then necessary so that you can cut it to the proper length. I have found the best way to cut the liner is with a Dremel cutoff di...

Re: Is this a good welder?
Repairing your current welder would definitely be cheaper than buying a new one. It sounds like you are close to finding the problem. The wire should, make that must, slide smoothly and easily through the liner. Liners can become worn, rough, dirty etc. They are a normal replacement part. First - di...

You don't say where you are located but if there is a Community College near you consider taking a welding course from them. Some have "ConEd" (continuing education) courses at night. For a modest price you will get a chance to play with a lot of equipment as well as some instruction. As f...

Re: .030 vs .035 in my MIG
Just a couple of comments... 125 amps is a little light weight for running .035 flux core. I have hit the duty cycle limit (time out to cool down) on my Hobart HH180 running .035 flux core. I suspect that your welder also has an over heat protection feature so you probably will not risk damaging the...
