Re: What the hell were you thinking?

If you happen to have 300 hours of spare time, 7,000 American nickels and the desire to make 35,000 welds, then you can make a nickel couch. Interesting.... Technically the currency belongs to the state and any misuse of the banknotes or the coins is illegal and punishable. For example it is illega...

Re: Critique my welds please

One more vote for tacking on the flats vs corners.
My thought for saying that is this:
If by chance that you don't melt the tack on the corner when you weld the joint out, you have a place where lack of fusion or possibly a crater crack could result in a weld failure.

Re: 3G Flux Core, 1" plate test

Heat input (joules per inch) = Volts x Amps x 60 divided by travel speed (measured by in/min) I suppose there is an "assumption" that a weave (particularly a wide weave) will not have the same "forward" travel speed along the joint, therefore given all other info remaining the sa...

Re: machine settings on welding procedure(WPS)

The chart don't need to be exact(although I'd like to be as close as practical)...what I mean is that the AISC(American Institute for Steel Construction) uses AWS D1.1 (structural shops), AWS D1.5(bridge shops)as the code to adhere to. So if you follow those codes, you have some wiggle room for the ...

Re: machine settings on welding procedure(WPS)

You linear scales for WFS and Amps look good to me - only change I would make is to the Voltage scale. I would set your voltage increments to 0.5 or 1.0 volt to make it easier for a welder to read. The digital machines I've seen so far only read out to tenths. Otherwise, I'd say try some of the set...

Re: Critique my welds please

My only constructive comment is to either double tap the trigger or back into the crater to fill it when you stop to make the crater the same size as the rest of your weld.

machine settings on welding procedure(WPS)

Anyone here have some .045" L-56(ER70S-6) and 85/15 who can try something for me....? I made a machine settings chart and want to see if others find this useful in setting up their machine. I intend to start using a chart like this on WPSs that I write for small fab shops that are AISC c...

Re: 3G Flux Core, 1" plate test

However, technically you can weave as wide as you want to as long as you can prove it will pass. There is technically nothing we can say against a wide weave if you pass your bend tests repeatedly. That is not accurate. Bend tests only give information on discontinuities on the weld and ductility. ...

Re: 3G Flux Core, 1" plate test

Just as a rule of thumb (and I don't recall whether this was from AWS D1.1 for materials of 3/4"+, another code, or an anecdote from a weld inspector), you should never weave to produce wider than a 5/8" bead. It is shown in AWS D1.1:2010, Clause 3, Table 3.7 "Prequalified WPS Requir...

Re: porosity with 7018 Lincoln rods from Lowe's

see if this helps. Long story short, after striking your arc, hold a slightly longer arc for a second, and pause. You have to let the weld heat up and get the flux burning. http://www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us/support/welding-how-to/Pages/low-hydrogen-porosity-detail.aspx You may be on to something...

I was hoping for a pic from the back side of the base plate.(the very bottom as it sits in the pics) :P IN the original post the top drawing appears to be missing some hidden lines, unless I'm not seeing the detail in the second drawing correctly. Re: suspension brackets on diff housing

I remember rebuilding my old 12 bolt that came factory in my 70 RS/SS Camaro. I was cleaning the thing up and wondering where all of that grease came from. After I got it clean enough to look it over for leaks, I found that the factory plug welds where the axle tubes were pressed into the cast housi...

Re: suspension brackets on diff housing

Are you simply welding brackets onto the axle tubes or will you be welding to the cast housing? Axle tubing is a no brainer as it is just mild steel, however you may want to build a fixture to be able to clamp it down and restrain it during and after welding to keep the tubing straight(depends on th...
