Re: Welding school update (Tee Joint)
It would be fun to cut that sucker and etch it with a proper chemical that would show all the runs. Phosphoric acid does it I think. You can cut and etch with acid from a car battery....I use red fuming nitric acid(much quicker) The better you can polish the section, the better you will be able to ...

I have felt a tingle before but it was because it was over 100F in the shop, my clothes were soaked and my belly felt a tingle where I was leaning over the edge of the table (where my work clamp was attached). Wet gloves will also give you this same sensation. Unless you can muster enough conductivi...

Re: angle of welding machine on trolley
That's very logical :-) I never really understood what I heard about it being angled for better wire feed. Anyway, that was an easy one. what they may have meant was that the wire feeder needs to be angled towards the work so that you don't have to bend the whip way around and kink the liner when t...

A guy once told me I needed to shake a fire extinguisher up first or it wouldn't put a fire out. I have heard that over time fire extinguishers with powder in them can settle in high vibration environments and not work unless they are shook up. Mainly in something like a vehicle environment. When I...

Re: Eastwood 175 wire feed issue!!!!
You can adjust the tension on the Wire Feed drive rollers...don't tighten it where it crushes the wire, but it shouldn't slip too much either....sounds like it may be set a touch loose and the wire is slipping...also make sure that the drive rollers have a groove on them for the size wire that you a...

So the 1/2" PJP with 1/2" fillet on the back is typical at the gusset plates as well as all around the 4140 stub to 572 base plate?

Re: 2nd weld pass on torque converter
Sounds like your first pass is cooking some impurities out and when you try to run back over the first weld it can't handle all of the junk that has floated out of the first pass. Just a guess. Are you chipping the silicon islands off before attempting the second pass? We are assuming that you are u...

125 amp machine "should" handle the .030 wire OK, it's marginal, but it "should" weld. I have a Hobart Handler 135 and it likes the .030 wire a lot better than the .035. You should be getting a nice quiet hissing sound as you weld, if you're getting a lot of spatter and crackling...

Re: Problems with undercut in horizontal position
Also watch the top toe of the weld wash up against the vertical surface as you travel along the joint and make sure to slow down hang around a bit longer so that it can fill in and not leave undercut. I agree with the other about running straight stringers and leave the weave alone.

Nathan, If they use AWS D1.1 as the welding code, then you most likely will have a 22.5° bevel on both plates, as Dirtynails mentioned, and if they use the test coupon with backing, the root will be 1/4"(see prequalified joints in AWS D1.1:2010... "B-U2a" on page 95). You should be ab...

Re: 3G Flux Core, 1" plate test
I am using Lincoln Electric's 00.45" flux core, I think it is NR-11 or NR-211. On 3/8" plate I was running the first 2 passes at 21 V and 300 IPM and would drop to 20.4 V and 300 IPM. All three passes at 21 V was too hot and I would have the puddle run down the test piece. I set up a 1&qu...

It happens to the best of us. Well, at least it happens to me. I was running self-shielded flux core and switched to solid wire and couldn't for the life of me figure out why the arc was running funny and no penatration. After a few mins...ok maybe like 10 mins, I remembered the polarity was backwa...

jrouse, The one thing that I am most impressed with on your practice plate is the straightness of your stringers. A lot of people lose their way when running beads on plate. I love it when it looks like you used a straight edge. I used to draw lines on the plate with a piece of sharpened soapstone w...

Re: Control on keyhole
Yes, but the results were suspect. I could not run anything, old 6010, new 6010, and even the 6011 I picked up. After a while I went into reset mode: I got some 7018 I had previously run without incident, went into the garage and cranked the machine up to 120 A. The welder is sitting in the garage,...
