Unless your wire-feed welder has an option for constant-current output, it is a constant-voltage power source. TIG needs a CC power source.

Re: 320A enough to 20mm plates together?
It all depends upon joint configuration, spec for the weld, which has you use, position you’re welding. Will the plates be beveled? Too many variables to say definitively, but they (Fronius) are great machines. If I were MIG/MAG welding 20mm plates, I’d be in flat position using spray transfer. Lik...

Re: Paint & Rust on recycled metal
Muriatic acid should do the trick. But by the time you take all safety precautions, and then neutralize the acid, clean the part, and dry it, you could have just used a coarse wire cup-wheel or silicon-carbide strip-wheel to knock off the paint/rust. Your call. I'm building a MIG cart right now out ...

Re: You'll have to lower yourself to answer this one
The advice you're asking for is for recommendations for TIG welder? As in what brands?? Seems like you found one suited for your budget, or is that not the case? As you've already found out for yourself, for <$200 you're looking at very cheap overseas machines with very limited features, and many of...

Re: 320A enough to 20mm plates together?
Best case scenario: Yes. Worst Case scenario: No. As CJ said, some configurations will take less amperage to weld together than others. In a " will it work in ALL cases? " type of question? I'd say no, not in a single pass with no bevel. At 20mm, you're asking to weld nearly 7/8" thic...

Re: What's So Hard About TIG Welding?
Filler in Grade 9 is not common at all; I've looked. I would suggest CP2 filler (commercially pure grade 2) for Grade 2 base, either Grade 5 or Grade 23 filler (aka Grade 5 ELI) for Grade 5 or Grade 9 base. Granted I've not done a lot of titanium welding, most of just for curiosity's sake. You can u...

If by "swiping the cup with the wire" you mean "swiping the tungsten with the wire", then that video already exists. I made one on my YouTube channel where I use my HTP Inverarc 200TLP stick welder as a lift-arc TIG, for demonstration purposes. I show detailed still shots and slo...

I've never had issues with MTS tungstens but then I've used HF start. Have you tried striking it with the filler rod to initiate the arc? Are you familiar with that method?

Just my opinion as a "high-end hobbyist", forget weave patterns when learning, unless it's just to have fun and "see what happens". For actual learning, I learned by constant-speed travel, or sometimes using a forward-then-slightly-backward type of motion, and then I did cut and ...

Re: First Mistake - New to TIG
Maybe just a bit of refresher... Does the height of the arc above the workpiece tend to establish how wide the bead is ? Yes, but that is also a function of time, and torch angle. And, does a shorter arc (tungsten closer to the workpiece) generate more heat in the workpiece for the same amperage an...

I have managed to run some tests and now have a general idea what IPM im getting on each setting but the volts/power has me stumped. is it simply a case of trial and error? Generally yes, you figure out the IPM that will deposit the amount of metal you want, and the voltage is tweaked to provide th...

Re: Argon refill / purchase questions
Most places do sell you welding gases cheaper-per-cubic foot with larger tanks, but it may not be the case everywhere . My supplier has pretty much the same cost/cuft regardless. My main point is that you need to ask the actual suppliers how they work, as they will all be perhaps slightly different....

Re: Argon Gas - Estimating Usage Based on Gauge Pressure
Would it be 337/150 more volume for the T, or isn't there a reliable way to compare the gauge reading to the volume for different size cylinders? From what I can tell/know, that estimate (the 337/150 factor) slightly over-shoots the volume comparison because the T cylinder has a higher required fil...

I'm one of those that had issues with cheap TIG consumables, namely gas lenses. Once I isolated the issue, I threw out all my cheap gas lenses. I only kept CK and other name brand gas lens collet bodies, but I did keep my non-namebrand standard collets, as there isn't too much to fail with those, as...

Re: Metal cutting circular saw for beveling plate?
I don't see why it would not work on flat plate with the appropriate saw & blade. On a side note, I had once contemplated creating a new style of plasma-cutter pipe beveler that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, and would be affordable by nearly anyone (relatively speaking). It's just a gedankenexp...
