They are vehicles sub frames. Front and rear frame bolted to a central cab. They are heat treated post welding.

Funny how that works. When you have a person who is willing to send PM's to people to fight, it brings the whole place down.

I wasn't here to do moderation for a while. We got rid of one particular fool. I think is going better now. Hang around for a while and see what you think. But as with anything on the internet, unless someone actually personally threatens you, you have the power to ignore things said, and don't let ...

Re: Is this start stop technique for thin sheet metal valid?

It's not ideal, but it definitely works. The fellow in the video is still pretty skilled. Just because it's not the best process doesn't mean it is easy. As for slag inclusion, the slag melts out of the way quickly, it's very fluid with stainless. Cold laps aren't an issue with stick welding because...

I can't vouch for the filler metal selection. One can only hope that the God like figure who is in charge actually talked to the company supplying the base metal.

No problem mate. As I said, I don't do well at it.

I think whipping could be defined as a fast movement forward and back, in the direction of travel. Weaving is a slower movement and is usually across the path of travel.

I've heard of people who are impressed with boss weld. But I think it's the machines above that crappy entry level.

I got told that the unimig viper 120 is a cracker of a machine.

Re: Teaching Myself To Weld: My Journey

I just watched a video on the harbor freight welder. The titanium? We don't have them in Australia. But it definitely welds, but don't be too hard on yourself. The low end machines have a a tough time starting, and that's going to be difficult on your dirty old floor pans. Get some 1/8 hot rolled fl...

Pro tip, most robots aren't waterproof, so if you take a shower, you are probably not one.

Re: What I do wrong (uphill stick welding)

This was (and still is) my problem with vertical up stick welding. You need to hold a very short arc. This means that as you go across the middle of the joint, you actually need to push into the joint in a ^ pattern. To keep the arc the same length in the middle as it is on the outside.

These are the torches we have at work. It's an inbuilt button. A tiny click click switch. You click it once to upslope and hold it down to run the set downslope time.

Re: Need advice

Looking like you have a handle on things, but don't whip with flux core. Drag it the way you would with stick welding. The wire speeds will be lots higher than the comparable voltage on solid wires.

Good luck with it. Pro tip (from jody) if you set your downslope very long, you can hit the button when things get hot, it'll be like backing off the pedal. When it cools down, get back on the button and keep going.

Re: How to improve gas coverage

You cannot stick out that far with a normal gas nozzle. Absolute Max is about 3/16. Try stepping up a cup size. 8 or a 9. We use standard collets and collet bodies at work on steel with small stick out, upto 190 amps. Happy days. Play with your gas flow, too much gas for the cup size can suck in air.

Re: Problem with mig welding heavy equipment

I do believe that the issue here is people using a mig but not keeping the proper travel speed. It's easy to go slow and think you are putting in a big weld, but really you are just putting in caulk. If you go fast enough to keep the wire chewing into the base metal, she ain't going anywhere. But it...
