Re: Shop Stool project question

[quote="admin"]I think 3/4" would work. I went with 1" because "there is no kill like overkill" I like your thinking - so would you also say 50cal is good for woodchuck ? !!!!! ( maybe needs scientific testing - like the bike frame welds ! ) Thanks for some great video...

Re: Flow meter ball doesn't drop when I am done welding

Oh - I'd assumed you had a machine that developed this fault or had recently purchased something second hand that was faulty ! if this is just theoretical how about . 1 - gas leak 2 - gas solonoid / machine fault ( including weird post flow timers ) 3- ( Welding Mikes ) very high regulator pressure ...

Re: Flow meter ball doesn't drop when I am done welding

At risk of stating the obvious - (1) a major leak - but this would have to be so bad I would think you could hear it or even may get almost no flow at the torch ( check all pipework with soapy water ) or (2) most likely - the gas solonoid valve is not closing and you can hear good gas flow at the to...

Re: Is Isopropanol suitable for cleaning aluminum ?

Thanks for the advise guys - oddly went back & got a fairly decent weld on some of the same 3mm sheet I'd had problems with before but I did buy some acetone to clean it with just to rule out one variable - now I don't know if it's me / the retarded Chinese welder or the cleaning that's improved...

Re: VW Beetle Trans

Hi - I've not done a VW tranny - but many other gearbox cases with cracks in / lugs broke off / chunks knocked out of them ! - the biggest challenge is the amount of oil that the porous nature of ally absorbs over time - once clean enough the castings seem to weld faily well with any process availab...

Re: Tig torch overheating

Hi - I've also been looking at water cooled options but am tempted to go with the small size 20 torch ( when funds allow ! ) - if you want to stay with the large hardware so any collets / ceramics you already have fit the new set up just go on Ebay and search WP18 torch body - there are plenty of su...

Is Isopropanol suitable for cleaning aluminum ?

I recently read with interest several warnings about cleaning aluminum with brake cleaner on another post - thanks for the heads up - I figured it just evaporated so there was no problem doing this ! I've welded most other processes for some time but am new to AC tig -my only aluminum welding previo...

Re: Proping or Leaning???

I have gas / arc / mig welded since age 15 & got on well - but only just got into TIG ( aged 50 & eyesight not what it used to be ! ) as previously most of my welding was outdoor repairs on earth moving / agricultural equipement - I have the same problems your having with keeping steady &...

Re: Footpedal....No sir!

Just a humble opinion - but when watching Jody tig smallish parts seated at his bench the pedal is a great help - but the parts you mention are likely to be heavy / difficult to manouver so welding will be positional done standing - it's difficult to use the pedal in this way - also I think the peda...

Re: What filler rod to use on medical grade ss tig welding

I expect someone will disagree - but in my limited experience most commercial medical equipement & food grade stainless is 316 - so you should stick with 316 filler rod - it's never great welding something of unknown material - but I believe 316 filler can be used on most non critical parts of l...

Re: Best AC frequency for Aluminum - modifying Chinese tig

I am really keen to make this modification to my own Cobel welder - so PLEASE for myself & anyone else with this welder let us in on the secret ! ( pictures would be great & what value resistor ) I don't know if it was your electronic skills or a bit of luck / experimenting that got you to t...

Re: Best AC frequency for Aluminum - modifying Chinese tig

Hi - I recently purchased the same Cobel TIG as it was all I could afford for how much work it will get - on DC it seems OK though the end amps on 4T won't go down low enough- but on AC it suffers from arc wander & I really got annoyed trying to figure if it's something I'm doing or the welder -...
