Re: Aluminium or Stainless Fuel Tank?

Well at this stage, I'm not really too fussed about the cost, it's largely a no-expense-spared build and I just want to use whatever will be best for the application rather than be most cost effective. The other thing with steel is that although the materials are cheaper the subsequent finishing cos...

Re: Aluminium or Stainless Fuel Tank?

Otto Nobedder, thanks, good points about the isolation. This should be relatively easy as the standard tank uses isolation pads around the top of the tank and rubber between the tank and mounting straps. This will hopefully make the same setup relatively easy to reproduce on a new tank. LtBadd, for ...

Re: TIG Newbie - Curling Edges?

Nice. Now ditch that brass-plated carbon steel wire brush and use a SS wire brush. ;) That brush isn't for welding. I've got three of those floating around which are just for general workshop use. I've got two wooden handled wire brushes which both have stainless steel "wire". These are t...

Aluminium or Stainless Fuel Tank?

I'm thinking about making my own fuel tank. I'd like to make one to fit under the car which will mount as the original stock one did. I'm trying to work out what the best material is to make it out of and it seems to be hotly debated online. Some people seem to think stainless steel tanks are more l...

Re: TIG Newbie - Curling Edges?

Hi guys, I thought I'd come back and post again in case anyone else comes to the forum with the same problem that I did. Thanks to everyone's input I've now figured out exactly what was causing each of the problems which I initially asked about. Through trial and error I know for sure what was causi...

Re: TIG Newbie - Curling Edges?

Thanks for all the input. I bought some stock which was literally only about 1mm thicker than that stock I was practicing with and it seemed to make all the difference. I think I was just getting ahead of myself and trying to weld something which was too thin for my limited experience. This was my f...

Re: TIG Newbie - Curling Edges?

Thanks for all the tips. Gary, I've wire brushed/acetoned everything to within an inch of it's life! At first I thought that cleanliness was the problem but I'm sure I'll have another look at the balance, when I turned it up that high before it quickly burned back the electrode but as you say I gues...

Re: TIG Newbie - Curling Edges?

Thanks Rick, I'm not necessarily expecting a nice puddle, I was just expecting something better than the horrible mess you see above ha ha! OK, so with the possible exception of tweaking the amperage, it doesn't sound like there's anything fundamentally wrong with my setup or my method, it's just th...

TIG Newbie - Curling Edges?

Hi guys, I've been MIG welding for a while and have just bought myself a TIG. I found that DC welding steel/stainless steel wasn't as hard as I'd expected to get started with and feel like I've begun to get to grips with it relatively easily. I mainly bought the TIG for the aluminium jobs I need to ...

Re: Weld Porn...

Just followed you on IG Rick H. :P Some of the fabrication skills that people share on there are amazing (not just welding either). I admit, I'm a TIG newbie so my untrained eye can't pick out the perfect from the not so perfect but still, the work of a lot of the guys on there really inspires me pr...

Re: Hello from the UK

Thanks, yeah the videos are great. Really appreciate that people take the time to share their skills. I'm going to post in the relevant area in the forum in a minute to see if anyone can help diagnose my problem. I'm sure it's either machine settings or simply that I'm bad at welding aluminium ...

Hello from the UK

Hi all, I've been MIG welding for a few years but only really in the last year or so started to reach a stage where I'd consider myself proficient, for a hobbyist at least. That said, I learn something new with every weld! My main interest is from an automotive perspective as I'm doing a lot of fabr...
