Re: Contaminant porosity during TIG welding
To be honest, I hardly prep cold rolled at all. The scale is usually trivial enough to get dealt with by the additives in the fill rod and they are almost always going to get painted over anyway. Pictures would probably help but that sounds like a shielding issue. What are you using as a flow rate a...

Re: Tig cooler antifreeze
I'm making a home-brew cooler and was just going to use water wetter. Much better heat transfer than antifreeze and I don't really expect to ever have it hit the freezing point so all I really want is corrosion and biological inhibition. http://www.amazon.com/Red-Line-80204-Water-Wetter/dp/B000CPI5Z...

Maybe other suppliers are different but my Airgas rep tells me they only refine one grade (research I think) and then they sell it for different prices depending on the label.

Re: Welding a cracked Chevrolet bellhousing
What you have planned sounds pretty good. The only thing I'd add is that drilling through the end of the crack is the only real way to stop it from propagating. In addition to notching it out, you might as well run a cutoff wheel down the crack too. The 1/16" gap will make life easier in the en...

Re: Flowmeter Preset PSI; 30 PSI vs 80 PSI
Well, as far as molecule size goes, there should be no real difference in the behaviors between a super light and a super heavy gas. Now that is the ideal, not necessarily the reality. It is usually pretty close though and when you look at the flow rate constant between argon and helium, they are bo...

Re: Flowmeter Preset PSI; 30 PSI vs 80 PSI
My instinct is that the Ideal Gas Law is going to be a harsh mistress here and you are going to run into issues with actual volume of gas vs the way the gas flow rate is measured. I would guess on a floating ball type flowmeter, the mass of the gas changes the reading dramatically even at the same f...

Re: Stainless Flat stock grid
LOL! I just got the metal in to make a SS grill top. Buying the stock was absurdly priced so I'll actually be using 1/8" fill rods. Was going to clamp them to a copper plate and then hit them hard and fast. Did you settle on an approach that you felt worked well? -Sandow Edit: I tried it out a ...

Re: Gold Lens Questions
A 9 is probably fine but adjustable auto darkening helmets are pretty cheap these days. The darkness of the shade makes no difference for UV emissions which is what causes real damage, even a clear plastic lens will block all of it. Darkness of the shade is just to keep your receptors from bleaching...

I emailed the company, but no response with this question (hope I'm in the right forum): The main amps dial setting and digital readout are way off----like 50 amps. I'm thinking I should go by the digital, but not sure. Have any of yoos guys had an issue like this with this machine? This is my firs...

Re: Gas Lense cleaning?
Well, the vinegar and peroxide vapors may result in a clean spot amongst the chili splatters but if you can live with the "patina" being damaged it should be fine. The end product is copper acetate which is terrible for you if you are a fish but is mostly harmless if you are human... -Sandow

Re: Gas Lense cleaning?
image.jpeg So for probably less than a penny each, you can electroplate copper onto the screens. It doesn't make them splatterproof but not much sticks to them so you at least double their life. I've been welding on a rusted 62 continental and was trashing them all the time since there are hidden p...

Re: aluminum to magnesium
No.
You can weld it together and it will look fine. It will have zero strength though and any jolt will break the weld. Given what it is, It is probably worth welding in magnesium with an appropriate fill rod.

Re: Tig Brazing Bronze Prop
You are going to find that welding brass sucks as soon as you try it. Brass is copper/zinc so it will blow off zinc fumes when it gets hot so wear as respirator and don't melt the base metal. It will never be pretty but if you are just filling pits, you should be fine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Re: Too much heat? Contamination?
The comments about back purging certainly have merit. If the outside looks grey, the inside may well be sugared. It is worth taking a look if you are going to be putting liquids through it. My guess at the overall problem would be insufficient shielding and too long of a welding time. A jumbo gas le...

I remember a lot of people in my class having issues with that as well. I think more than anything it was the people that couldn't see what was going on well that were inconsistent. If you are using one of the beat up class helmets, that is probably 90% of your problem. If visualizing the weld puddl...

I've had little luck with nickel 99, a bit better with bronze. Yet to try this stuff I but I hear good things about it around the track.
