Looking pretty bombproof BigD. FWIW, I looked through the FIA regs and they regard the bend in the belt bar as totally kosher so I'm not sure why lemons is mostly opposed to them. I've got a race next month and I'll ask then. That guy's cage... Too bad it went that way but we've all seen cars wreck ...

Re: Acid stripping scale
Muriatic acid and hydrochloric acid are the same kind of acid but they still name them diferent because one of them is watered down and not as strong. Any acid strong enough to remove mill flake will likely be strong enough to eat away at the base metal leaving the risk of chemical stress induced i...

Muriatic acid is the 16th century name for hydrochloric acid. Thats ok though, I still prefer to think of my electrodes as being Wolfram

That makes sense. There would be way more non-linearity in the flow rates the way I was thinking.

Acid stripping scale
Have any of you had success using acids for stripping mill scale and light red rust? I've been playing with phosphoric acid and hydrochloric acid and they both have their merits but I'm not entirely satisfied with either. Are there any other acids or mixes of acids that are worth trying?

Re: Basic regulator question
Crack it slowly at first to avoid problems but the ball will pop up on that type of regulator and that is normal. You just don't want it slamming to the top. You may have noticed the dial flowmeter spiking too, same deal. They are going from atmospheric pressure to thousands of PSI after all. The fl...

One real difference with 4130 though: "Unlike other materials that are high strength the BS 4T45 tube does not require any pre nor post heat treatments. Unlike other material such as 4130 / 25CRMO4 Chrome Moly, which are close in terms of mechanical strengths but not chemical makeup, do require...

Re: 3D printed Tungsten Sharpener
The different SLA resins have different properties. The clear is very ridged but can be brittle as a result. This is a thick enough print that I seriously doubt is would have problems is it was dropped from any reasonable height though. The tough resin is flexible but not stretchy and would likely j...

Re: 3D printed Tungsten Sharpener
So I thought I'd follow up after I'd had a chance to use this for a bit. There are holes for 1/8", 3/32" and 1/16" and 4 angles per tungsten size. Seems to range from about 2:1 to 5:1. Not sure why you'd ever actually want 5:1 on a 1/8" tungsten but it is there if you want it. So...

Re: Taking my cup for a walk
Don't expect the technique to be magically perfect the first time around. It takes a bit of getting used to but can be really handy for things like vertical fillets. Try it without the arc on a few times to get the motion down and it may feel pretty natural before long. FWIW, I like using a cup larg...

Seems to shield just fine though the tungsten is a little off center. I puddled some 304 and it stayed uncolored on top and about a nickel size rainbow on the back. I'll try and get some video later.

Re: needing some advice
Well squaring off tubing would seem to be a job for a lathe if you really want it 90 degrees. You can do a pretty good job with a chop saw that has been adjusted square though. Getting down in there for the last pipe may be the realm of something like this: http://www.ckworldwide.com/180-amps-ck180....

Also, I was really thinking about getting rid of DOM completely and switching to CDS tubing. The CDS is more money but I hate how dirty and inconsistent DOM is. Saving some time on prep could easily balance the extra cost. I'd never run across CDS before and it took a while to find up front pricing...

I was thinking more of these: IMG_1237.PNG My experience repairing castings is limited to fixing crap around the track so maybe I've just never come across it before but these look like partial thickness stress fractures. No idea if they really matter or if they are just a common casting imperfectio...

Well, a lot of this is going to be a swag but I'd think the motor should be fine but obviously you need to take precautions about fuel and fumes. I've welded on plenty of cars with everything still connected and never had an issue. The welding is going to fry paint in a pretty decent radius. I'd cle...
