Re: Welding unknown stainless

Ahhh got it... 309,316,308 would be the choices in order. 316 first if the hooks say anything about marine use or anything along those lines. Good chance the hooks are a 300 series, maybe 301 or 304, 303 if they have machined features, and 316 if they are "marine" hooks. Another check you ...

Re: Welding unknown stainless

Knowing what the part is used for can help sort out what kind of SS it Might be... Welding SS without knowing what type it is can cause all sorts of problems. If this is a critical/costly part send a bit to a lab and get a better clue of what your working with. If its a noncritical widget and your g...

Re: PTA Hardfacing Bucket Teeth

How long do the tips/nozzles hold up?
Is this the type of plasma welding where the work piece is part of the circuit or the type where the arc is contained in the torch?
Looks shiny,I want one!

Re: Welding Tungstencarbide?

Ok, now I see and I have very little to offer. Never gotten to play with stellite, just heard stories about it.
I'd start with grinding most of that old stuff off to start with clean base metal.
Sounds like its in a nasty environment.

Re: Welding Tungstencarbide?

Pics are needed... something sounds weird about this. WC can be brazed/soldered but arc welding is out... Some of the overlays lay down a cobalt base with WC sprinkled into it as they weld it(automated with lasers or plasma arc welding)... is that what your up against? Cobalt can be welded but its R...

Re: Welding Tungstencarbide?

So which part are you trying to fix, the overlay or the body?
Some hard face overlays will crack no matter what, just the nature of what they are.
lots of preheat, a high nickle filler, and post heat/slow cooling for the cast iron.
Best of luck...

Re: Identify Filler Rod

Hi everyone, The lye test will tell you about the elements in the Al alloy, not a definitive test but it will land you in the ball park. It works by etching the surface and the resulting colors are due to reactions with alloying elements; so it will tell you that an element is present but not how mu...

Re: Identify Filler Rod

A full stick of Mg shouldn't light on fire until you chop it into little bits and throw it in a bonfire... :D Drill chips and shavings however...  :D Another thing I remembered was something about etching Al with oven cleaner (sodium hydroxide) and the colors it would turn can land you ...

Re: Identify Filler Rod

One way to tell Al filler wires apart is drop the wire onto a hard surface and listen to the ring it has when it bounces. 4043 has a "dead" ring to it, 5356 has a "clear" tone that rings out even in a noisy-ish shop... Its hard to describe but give it a try with fillers that you ...

Mini C clamp

1 of 2 itty bitty clamps I made at work one day due to having no other way to do the job. This is V2. V1 works, but is too pug-fugly to put on the internets... I *think* it might be made out of some nickle alloy...it was made from scraps pulled out of the iron worker drop bin... The puddle was real ...

Re: Welding AR plate to mild steel

I have had to put together a fair bit of AR 234, its the lite version of ar500... its "weldable" or so they say... I also did a batch of ar400 (I think) steel targets. I used 12018 and quite a bit of preheat. The preheat was as much for the metal as it was to get rid of the arc blow from b...

Hello From NY

Hi,
I'm from upstate NY. I've been welding for a bit over 10 years now.
I'll help out as much as I can.
Thanks,
