Re: Aluminum grinding

When I went to the 3 day school on welding aluminum cylinder heads, they had us using ATF on the
open flute burrs pictured above. I wondered about putting "oil" on something you're going to weld on?
One of Jody's videos he used wax on flap discs- but didnt elaborate.

Re: Glass Cheater Lens

My local store, American Welding and Gas, has Miller brand glass cheaters in stock and they are great!
The only thing I notice is I have to have the split in the cheater squared up with my glasses to prevent annoying
lines.

Do you suppose if you narrowed the gap just a touch it might start the arc at a lower current?

Re: filler rod quality does a name brand make a difference?

As far as tungestn goes I bought some "ABN" brand lanthanated in 1/16" and 3/32" seems to be good. Not dipping them as much. I usually buy my stuff on Amazon. LWS is a bit pricy. I bought the same for my initial supply up for the new welder, I thought they seemed alright. I don'...

spend more time getting your new top angles right so you don't need the wooden wedge underneath to make it more comfortable.

If you ever need to chunk up a bunch of old aluminum wheels, Diablo makes blade for your circular saw that cuts them like cold butter. Just make sure your saw is under the max rated RPM for the blade (5400) took a few hours to clean up the mess! lol http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v313/J...

Buddy of mine bought a wall tent/stove package. He managed to break off on hinge on the stove door and it had a crack as well. Old, snotty wood gunk saturated, cast iron. Watch Jody's video on tiggigng cast with aluminum bronze. Ordered rod and had a go. it aint purdy but it worked! there was enough...

Brown crud- it has a tan coating of some sort on the inside, I'm sure to prevent tasting the metal.
blown away- thinking AL, I used AC current and kept adding amps to try to get it to go.= Fidos butt :)

Hurray for exnailpoounder! Picked up some .035" 308L rod this morning and had success! Thank you for the heads up! I got myself a new helmet this morning too, one with the delay settings. My old Speedglas would flash me every time the arc got hidden, was starting to piss me off! It's reserved f...

An one tried welding on a beer keg?

A freind wanted me to close up the handle holes and cut the top out of on old beer keg for a smaller tank cleaning tank. Its got some kind of sealer on the inside that appears to be penetrated into the metal. When you hit it with the arc, you get the nastiest brown crud you could imagine and the met...

Zinc soldering rod, often sold under names like Aluma-weld that is applied with propane torch might be an option here... never used it myself. Re: MIG machine question

A lot of Snap On welders are made by Systematics. I had mine for 25 years before l got my HTP MIG 2400. Never any trouble. Good machine just overpriced on the Snap On truck. I upgraded for more power. Are you sure it's not an FM 140? it is indeed a FM140, a fat fingered mis-type. Say what you want ...

MIG machine question

I've got a Snap-On FF140 A 110v MIG welder. Its been a great machine for me. The knobs on the front are labeled 1-12 for voltage and 1-whatever for wire speed. I know how to measure the wire speed into inches/minute. On the voltage side, can the voltage be measured with a meter? Would it need to be ...

[quote="maker of things" As Jody describes in some of his videos, the voltage range that co2 runs well in is narrower than c25 so it may be easier to have your machine set up poorly. [/quote] I've had my MIG for almost 20 years, and was pleased with my hobby welding skills I learned myself...

the plating on nuts/bolts/fittings will do that exact thing, ie, "the orange crust of WTF." you cant grind enough off to have anything left to weld IMO. Last week I tried grinding the galvanize of some conduit to use the tubing, and that crap sucked straight up the cup and fouled everythin...
