Re: auto darkening helmet
Thanks, I'm going to let it sit in the sun and see if it works any better. if not I'll look into a brand name one. I apologize. it's a solar helmet. when I tried using it, the arch was very bright that I couldn't see.

auto darkening helmet
Hello all, pardon my ignorance. I'm just a hobbyist welder. I had purchased a non brand auto darkening helmet a few months ago and left it in the garage. when I attempted to use it, it didn't work. I checked the setting, and it was set at # 10. my question is, does the battery need to be charged bef...

inconsistent welding amperage
Hello all. seem to have inconsistent welding from my machine which is a lincoln 225 buzz box. I don't do much welding, but there are days when I do one pass on a project without any issues, and when I go for the second pass, the electrode keeps sticking as if I don't have enough juice. I've increase...

Re: what's the cause of this?
Sorry about getting back so late. Got distracted doing other stuff and totally forgot about this post until I went into the garage this evening to do some welding. will take everyone's advice. was originally welding the stuff together to use as a brace for a stool I was going to make for the garage....

Hello all ,I'm just a hobby welder. a couple of days ago, welded some angle iron to a brake rotor. took a hammer to it, and it separated. used 6011 electrodes and the temp. in the garage was at 32 degrees. any ideas? here's a pic.

Hello all, does anyone know where I can purchase the lens housing that are similar to the pipefitters helmet, but flat without the curve? want to make my own welding shield. Thanks

Re: cutting speed
Depending on tip size there are fixed cut rates. Cutting by hand is a bit more art than science. Looking at the slag profile left on the cut edge and looking at the profile of the cut edge will reveal if your moving too fast or slow. Post up some pictures. Then we can help more. ok, next time I do ...

well, tried the 6011 and sure enough, burnt a hole. was able to patch it up using 6013's. just welded everything up with the 6013's. it just needs to hold the bike up, not support a building. only have a stick welder for the occasional hobby welding thanks for everyone's input.

Re: is 6013 just as strong as 6011?
the tubing is is just a tad thicker than 1/16th and the flat stock that I'm welding it to, is 1/8th. I'm trying to shorten the kick stand and also enlarge the foot print area so that the kick stand doesn't sink in the black top during very hot days. Thanks

is 6013 just as strong as 6011?
Hello all, as per the subject title. I've heard some negative comments about the 6013 electrodes. I know that the 6011's are a deeper penetrating electrode but I plan on welding a wider pad on the side stand of my bike and the tubing isn't too thick. I don't want to take a chance of burning a hole t...

hello all, have a oxy-propane set up for cutting. I'm no expert. but is there a way to determine if you're moving too fast or slow? sometimes, I have to go over what I just cut through. other times there appears to be excess slag. Thanks

Re: grinding down weld bead.
thanks for the responses. initially used a grinding disc to remove areas where I had deposited too much metal. then followed up with the flap disc when I got too close to the base metal. the kickstand is back on the bike. what's a tube sander? never heard of such a thing. is it the small rubber drum...

grinding down weld bead.
hello all, had to shorten the sidestand on my bike because it stands too vertical. after welding it, used the angle grinder to smooth it out so that it would look like one piece. after I finished it, it's not perfectly round where I had grinded off the excess weld. have watched youtube videos where ...

Re: using stainless steel rods on carbon steel
Thanks for the responses. I didn't give any thought about taking a after picture. Just gave the trowel back, and the neighbor was surprised. she was taking some plants from my yard a week ago,and had broken it. I discovered it later that day when I went to toss out some garbage. figure it would give...

using stainless steel rods on carbon steel
Hello all, was just tinkering in the garage and welding a neighbors gardening trowel that is made of stainless steel. after I was done, still had a bit of rod left, so decided to see if I could use it on a piece of black pipe that was scrap. it appears to work. does that mean that it's compatible? y...

Re: tips on stainless steel welding
Is the break on the blade or handle stem? Why not post up a pic so we can have a look. it broke where the handle attaches to the blade. looks like there were two small rivets securing it. I already grounded the broken rivets down, and plan on running beads down both sides where the stem of the hand...
