20170106_133901.jpg 20170106_134009.jpg Here a couple of the fittings I welded on today. Used 347 filler. Cut the top out of this keg and stripped the top ring down to handles, put on fittings, cleaned her up...Good paying job for about 2 1/2 hrs work. Very nice socket welds. How thick was the keg?...

Re: what pay should i ask for ??

Like others have mentioned, demand something concrete if you're comfortable. I.e., how long will you be at a decreased rate until a performance review and pay bump? I'd also recommend looking for some other offers to leverage your pay. Welding is a valuable skill and people are always trying to find...

Re: The true cost of getting started in the welding trade

Good morning fellow welders, This post will being with a scripture from the Good book "But don't begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it? Luck 14:28 As a newbie in the welding...

To join a union or not?

Hey guys, I know this has been discussed on the site a little here and there, and if this thread needs to be merged I understand, but I had some specific questions for ya'll. I am finishing up with my continuing education program at the community college pretty soon and I've been trying to make up m...

Re: Acrylic Paint for Welding Hood?

Interesting topic. SavePhace sells hoods with custom paint by professional artists. I'd like to hear the safety man's take on these, since it's both "paint" and "OEM". Acrylic enamel, urethane, and epoxy paints that can be made to stick to a plastic hood have similar flash point...

Re: First stick rods ever !! 6010,7018 tell me what ya think

Not bad Maloney for a first outing. You might be whipping the 6010 a little hard but that will fix itself over time, especially doing anything open root. You have the right idea with laying beads on beads on beads. Best way to learn. If you access to some angle iron, I'd recommend doing the same th...

Re: Acrylic Paint for Welding Hood?

That'd be cool mosquito, can't go wrong with a frankenstein design. I actually have an album cover in mind for what I want to paint on mine. Thanks for the replies everyone. I didn't really consider what a construction site might say about it. I'm not sure when I'll be pipe welding in the field sinc...

Re: pipeliners?

Not currently, I'm a student, but maybe in the near future. I've been stick welding a lot of open root pipe and I'm not sure if I'm going to go the pipeliner route or stick to TIG welding indoors. I enjoy both, and I'm a little better at the latter, but several aspects about pipelining are appealing...

Acrylic Paint for Welding Hood?

Hey Guys, I like to do a lot of painting on canvas, kind of an artistic guy, and I was wondering if it was safe to paint a design on my welding hood with regular acrylic craft paint? Nothing fancy, just something to distinguish my hood at school a little. I have a cheap Jackson with a matte black fi...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

You did a nice job on the cap. Is that walking the cup or free hand? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Thanks. Walking the cup. It's a little harder with pipe that big but using a number 12 cup helps a lot. Since it's 6G I do it left handed on one side and right on the other. I'm planning on tryin...

I'm still a student and this is what I did today:

Some schedule 80 carbon pipe in the 6G position, Tig root, Tig out,

Not sure why the photos are rotated that way, probably my cheap phone.

Re: First TIG Welding Project - Welder Cart

Ryan_82, the welds are solid, just not as purdy as I'd like, after all, isn't that one of the attractions of TIG welding? It's certainly what got my interest piqued and got me started. It's coming along, but it sure isn't as easy as Jody makes it look on YouTube. :P It'll come. Jody spent decades g...

Re: First TIG Welding Project - Welder Cart

Looks great! Especially for a first project. Every beginning welder grinds a lot, but it isn't nearly as integral the longer you're at it. As long as the weld is solid, it doesn't have to look pretty!

Good luck on future projects.

Thanks Mike. I've enjoyed watching Jody for a while now, and on his 6G stick video he mentioned the forum and I thought I'd give it a shot. Look forward to getting to know you guys and trading some tips and tricks. I love the challenge of welding and am glad I've found another resource to help climb...

Re: Practice with 7018

Not much to add to what others have already posted but a little side to side goes a long way with any iron powdered rod (which 7018 is) in getting it to lay flat. Drag in the flat and overhead positions, push vertical, and stack horizontal. It'll get straighter in time but try doing a little side to...

Hello from NC

Hello All, I'm a current vocational student who is trying to enter the pipe welding industry next Spring. Most of what I've done in school has been thick carbon pipe of various sizes, but I get the opportunity to practice on stainless as well. Occasionally I come up against an issue that even eludes...
