Re: Machinist Forums
Practical Machinist is horrible. It's like a lunatic asylum where the patients have valuable information you may be able to pry out of them by humoring them. Get in, ask your question, pretend you don't see the insults, thank them, and get out. Lots of jerks and bullies. People defend them because t...

That was with O2. Not sure what a heating flame should be like. I tried to get a nice blue flame that looked intense and didn't flap around too much.

Re: Which Regulator for Propane?
Tried the acetylene tip. Does this look right?
I read you can clamp a piece of metal around it to shield the flame for propane.
Guess I'm an expert now. If any of you kids need tutoring, I am here to help.

Re: Which Regulator for Propane?
Chinese tip is $40.
I am looking around, and I see a guy claiming the only difference between acetylene and propane heating tips is a little rim that protects the propane flame. Heck, I can thread an acetylene tip and make that.

Thanks. Not cheap, is it?
I have not tried it. The tip I have is for acetylene, and I have no idea whether it will do propane.

Re: Which Regulator for Propane?
Help! I can't figure out what size heating tip I need. The acetylene tip included with the kit is size 8. I want to be able to bend stuff and heat cast iron parts prior to welding. Right now, I have a 15"-wide piece of 1/4" plate, and I want to heat it red hot so my finger brake will bend ...

Re: Which Regulator for Propane?
Now I'm reading I can use the acetylene regulator after all. I connected it to the tank with an adaptor. I have a Victor CA2460 torch body. Looking to see what kind of propane stuff I need on the end of it. Sadly, a mouse made a home in the coiled hose before I took it out of the box, so now it smel...

Which Regulator for Propane?
Well, this is embarrassing. I bought a gas outfit a year ago, and it sat while I waited to find cheap tanks. I finally gave up and bought new ones. I built a cart for propane and oxygen, thinking I had bought a propane outfit plus additional stuff for acetylene. In reality, it turns out I bought an ...

Re: No Carts Made for Propane Tanks?
I finished the cart. I taped it up and used truck bed coating to cover all the bare metal. Hard to see in the photos. I still need a strap for the propane tank, and I'm going to buy solid tires and get rid of these ridiculous pneumatics. 09 21 20 propane cart 08 finished cart painted still needs pro...

Decided to put some tabs on the base of the cart to prevent the tanks from going anywhere. These weren't really needed, but what the heck.

I should add that I did find a cart for propane. I think it was on Amazon. It was $190 and didn't look all that great.

Re: No Carts Made for Propane Tanks?
Here is what I have so far. It wasn't hard at all. I cut the base of the handtruck away and replaced it with a bigger piece of plate that extends under a propane tank. I still have not made a bracket for the propane. I am planning to use a rubber strap instead of a chain, since I own the propane tan...

No Carts Made for Propane Tanks?
Is it just my imagination, or is there a glaring lack of carts made for propane outfits?
I bought a propane outfit, and I ended up converting a Home Depot handtruck into a cart. The welding carts I found online had tiny bases only wide enough for 7" bottles.

Re: CBN Wheels for TIG Electrode Grinding
I wouldn't buy them just for tungsten, but nearly everyone has a grinder, and CBN is superior for just about everything, so why not use the best if you can afford it? If you're a guy who only uses his grinder for sharpening lawnmower blades, and you think the cheap wheels that came with your grinder...

Re: CBN Wheels for TIG Electrode Grinding
I got my wheels from Woodturners Wonders. The speed is up to you. I got mine for sharpening wood tools, so I don't know if the grit choices I made are the best for everyone. They cut faster than ceramic wheels. I use a 180-grit wheel to do what an 80-grit wheel used to do. Using diamond may work, bu...

So it sounds like I'm going to have to keep indexing the part by hand. Clamping it to the table with the angle and the offset would be a project.

How to Hold Round Tube Against Square Tube at Angle?
Today I built one support for a stand for gong targets. The support has a vertical square tube. On top, there is a short piece of round tube. It's attached to the support at a 20° angle. How am I supposed to hold a 4"-long piece of round tubing on top of a square tube at a 20° angle while I wel...

Since automatic helmets block radiation whether or not they darken, I am not worried about getting flashed. I just want to see well.
The Lincoln helmet seems to get excellent reviews for clarity. Maybe I should just grab one.

I ended up using Airgas. While I was there, I asked about their policies, and they said they would swap any size owner tank. That was good news.
