Re: Question - Corrosion Resistance Problem on 304 Sanitary
If they didn't passivate it and the chrome got burned out, that would do it. I doubt it's a purge problem or it would be more consistent or at least everywhere.

Re: New to TIG - Any amperage and the aluminum is destroyed
The only way you can learn aluminum is by welding a lot of it, There is no "slow" pace with aluminum, the longer you weld on it, the hotter it gets and the faster you have to move OR it just warps all over the place. Aluminum is an absolute pleasure to work with once you've gone through th...

Lol.
Yep, it screws with electronics like it's no ones business.
Make sure you are grounded properly and your lights are grounded properly, the HF can screw with your watch, phone, all kinds of stuff you need.

Re: Help with TIG tacking, please....
Motorcycle tanks? I love motorcycles. Anyways, not getting off subject here..... I have a ZX-6R. Okay ENOUGH! SO! What I'm seeing here is you are heating it too much and don't have your filler in place before you go to lay the tack. Aluminum is notorious, absolutely freaking notorious for doing this...

Try stainless, it should help.

Re: Welding new cast iron parts, cracking after cooldown
Yeah, same way you would regular steel, just be aware of popping and if there's any oil or anything stuck in the metal it can "bleed" it out, so just be ready to clean it a lot, steel brush helps a lot.

Re: Welding new cast iron parts, cracking after cooldown
If you are doing more than one pass, run a stainless bead in there or just run it pure stainless. Stainless has enough flex to prevent it from cracking, I've welded a fair amount of cast iron and steel and by using stainless, I don't have to preheat, no burying it, none of that, the S.S will flex w...

No mixing gases, use 100% pure argon for stainless and just regular 308L wire.

Re: Maybe you guys can help?
I was going to pipe in and say it's definetley doable. I don't doubt I could do it. I've had to do similar repairs on cast iron, but that was a roof drain, in place, welding the broken pieces back together, drilling and re-tapping I've done engine and oily welding before, it's doable, so if it comes...

Try changing out your battery.
I doubt 20 degrees is enough to kill a helmet.

Re: Spot Weld inside a hole
Your best bet would probably be the TIG. fire it up and weld stuck a piece of rod or something to the tungsten. Then put it to HF start and lower it into the hole and when you are close, pull the trigger and it'll jump off the rod, then push it into the plug tip and that should do it, then it's stuc...

Re: 308L on cast iron to steel....it worked?
As a general rule and from what i've seen. Thermal stress, expansion & contraction and so forth IS the main concern in things like this. I've done some automotive stuff, stuff for motorcycles, hot water, boilers, etc. Down the road it COULD be a problem and it could not. Stainless is notorius fo...

Good point, could be that as well, still looks like TIG welding though, or perhaps solid wire MIG with shielding gas.

Re: Thin copper sheet to 1/4inch copper tube
It would be slightly more of a bright yellow. But, If you insist, TIG welding Copper is tricky because it's such a good conductor, by the time you pump heat into it, it's gone and spread so you need to pump a LOT of heat into it very fast for a short time, I've welded copper myself many times and th...

TIG, without a doubt.

I can say yes as well if you want. Then you can feel like it really is okay. Just remember the theory is that the thoriated tungstens are most toxic when being ground (grinded? how is that said correctly?) so most people wear a respirator or something. Otherwise, be aware of them sometimes snapping ...
