Re: Aluminum welding, oxide layer
Wow.
I missed some of this stuff.
So essentially the oxide layer is being sucked up by the electron flow and it's almost being ripped apart on a molecular level?

Re: Aluminum welding, oxide layer
Interesting, so how does that work?
What makes the oxide layer come off? It's obviously not magnetic so how come it just peels off when it requires so much heat to get rid of it otherwise.

Re: Aluminum welding, oxide layer
Interesting, So it's really the reversing of the current flow which breaks apart the oxide layer and opens it up to the base metal. I read it was bombardment of the ions but that's pretty general, I wanted a more in depth idea of how it worked. So the polarity reverses and that somehow rips the oxid...

Re: tig gloves + cleanliness
I never thought about that, and I never had a problem with that. I do change my gloves pretty frequently though, I usually keep them separate because I prefer my white palm gloves to stay white for as long as possible. I like to do stuff as high quality as possible so if you are that way as well, th...

Aluminum welding, oxide layer
OK, It's been a while but here's a question, as I teach people how to fix stuff I tend to get asked a lot of questions, most I can answer with utter confidence. "Because that's how it works, now do it" That seems to get me by and makes me look smart. So here's a question I've had In alumin...

It's what, cast steel or iron?
I've done a drill press base which was cast steel I think it was, did it with 308L stainless, no problems.

Re: Lap Joints - Thick to Thin
You run the bead mainly on the thick side and just kind of dip into the shteet as you go, kine of like a Z or C or whatever you want to use, but you won't be able to run it evenly, like right in the crack like you normally would. I would TIG it if I could, I always do TIG over anything else, other t...

Re: Rod size
What i learned is whatever the size of the gap is, that diameter filler you need. so if the seam is 1/4" wide, you need 1/4" filler. Seems to work for me. If it's 1/8" use 1/8" In theory, the thicker the plate it wouldn't reguire you to get bigger filler rod, if it's 1/2" th...

Re: Red hot steel
Well, it depends on a lot of things. How thick is it? Sheetmetal turns red in a hearbeat. 1/4" steel plate, not so much. Concave is not uncommon, it either means you are not adding enough filler or running way too hot and it's sinking, kind of like what aluminum does when you heat it up too muc...

Gotta love those desperate repairs. I once did a 1/4" hydraulic used to be swivel fitting because it was leaking, while it was still on the hose. It was leaking from the swivel section. Still holding to this day. There is no tool in this world as useful as a welder and a weldor, It's been prove...

Re: Purple Tungsten AC Aluminum Problems
Sure ,wolfram is Tungsten in German. It's more of a brand name and it just reflects high quality, that's what they got. Sometimes it can be difficult to notice the difference but if you get a bad batch of E3's or inconsistent results it can drive you up the wall whereas Wolfram's products won't do t...

Re: Stainless Steel gold tint
304 stainless can have galvanic reactions to minerals in the water, and it seemed to be enhanced in water with especially low amounts of entrained oxygen. It happened to 304-grade components on submarines based in fresh water river ports with low oxygen content. Not only discoloration, but galvanic...

I found the E3's fairly unreliable in terms of consistency. I use blue boxed, white band Wolfram one's from Germany now. Now those can do aluminum like it's no one's bussiness. Thanks for the tip. I will try my hand at them and see. But I found out why I was getting contamination with the E3. I had...

Re: Heating up metal and hammering for better fit before we
Olivero, that makes sense. But is sheetmetal because of how much it distorts? Yes, but when doing sheetmetal you normally want a fusion weld which is done with no filler, that can only be done if the seam is tight, our rule of thumb is if you can see light through it, it won't fuse without filler, ...

Re: welding brackets to back of chromed metal?
TIG it, don't just tack it, actually weld it. I hate when people say "I just need a couple of tacks, like they did originally" If they did that originally and I duplicate that, should I Expect a different result? Weld it like it's going on a tank. To answer your question, get the epoxy way...
