Yeah, I wouldn't do that, any deform in the barrel could be catastrophic.
I wouldn't weld on the side of a cylinder well for a piston.
Just ain't worth the risk. Grind it off or something, bondo it, don't weld it.

Re: Heating up metal and hammering for better fit before we
I beat the living stuff out of metal all the time, otherwise you can't fit properly. I find tacking and tapping is useful, not beating it too crazy, just tack it, tap it down, tack next spot, tap it down, etc. The thicker the metal the harder the tapping. Sheet metal is the worst in this. Cutting pr...

Re: Do I need a different auto dark lens?
The lens should be blocking out any harmful radiation but perhaps just the sheer amount of light is bothering you. I would just recommend darkening the lens more until you are comfortable, otherwise perhaps a happy medium of a pair of sunglasses and then a lighter shade in the helmet. But again, the...

Re: struggling with aluminum and tig
Yeah, if everything is going great except when you introduce filler, it could very well be the filler rod. 4043 and 5356 are the most common, 4943 is on the coming up and said to be better in fillet welds. I have 4043, 5356 and 4943 on the shelf at all times, 4043 I keep in different sizes as I use ...

Re: Stainless Steel gold tint
The oxidizers in the soaps will speed up the oxidation of the metal even with out the temperature changes. I’ve seen it on boiler chemical injection systems. Okay, but these 2 tanks have the least amount of chemical in them, they have a rinse aide which helps evaporate water off the washware, which...

Arno, Makes sense what you are saying, I think you are right. I just don't know how to make it so it won't happen again, without pinning down exactly why and how the color came to be, it'll be difficult to prevent. Per some stuff I Read online, that goldish color could also be from the oxide layer g...

Re: Stainless Steel gold tint
Perhaps, discussing it with my chemical rep he originally thought it might be iron oxide as someone else mentioned, delimer supposedly removes it, but didn't work. Perhaps I missed the answer? Water is softened, if it was ONLY due to chemical reaction in the water, I imagine it would be all of them....

Re: Stainless Steel gold tint
They apparently tried delimer, soak tank and some other chemicals used in the kitchen, nothing worked. I just went and tried delimer myself, doesn't do anything. It REALLY looks like a heat tint, but how did it get there? Temps are nowhere near 500*F, all kinds of stuff would melt before we got there.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you guys. DSC07873.jpg DSC07876.jpg DSC07877.jpg Interestingly enough, only the 2 last rinse tanks are what's affected, nothing else. Hey guys. I got a question for ya, there is a large commercial/industrial dishwasher that I take care of, it has multiple sections to it and each has it's own pump and heating system, it's called a flight type as the belt runs continously around, transporting stuff through it. The entire machine is ...

Re: gap filling
I personally find that fusing aluminum is a bad idea, not sure what your application is but it never worked well for me, it either started crawling back or the weld would crack. I just use some skinny filler and use as much as I need to get by. Considering dust is a result of abrasion and no abrasio...

I got a free 10 lb "sample" from Hobart of their 4943 once. I asked for a 1 lb sample.... Still have 80% of the box, it's been almost 2 years, lol. Check with them if they will send you a sample, they also sent me some oddball alloy for some oddball cast piece I was going to weld but never...

Re: Auto darkening helmet?
I use a Titanium 9400I with a Gen 3 headgear, works great. Their new T94 helmet with Clear Lens is apparently really good, but I doubt the colour hue changing is really THAT much of a game changer. I like the auto darkening, I've used passive lens but prefer auto dark, some people prefer passive, it...

Makes sense,
I've done the same project with TIG and that warps like a taco, lol.
I guess we'll see how it goes. Bit of time till it'll happen but I want to be ready.

Re: Getting a Millermatic 211
Cool, thanks for the advice. I have no clue about setting up mig properly, I know TIG and what to do there but I'm not there on MIG yet. I'll read both manuals and figure out how to set it up, then run some test beads and get it dialed in. Shouldn't be too difficult. Does the gun get super hot like ...

Re: TIG welding classes
True, perhaps. I do believe there are still plenty of things to learn especially on the Dynasty machines by Miller where you can adjust everything under the moon and sun, Perhaps those can assist in getting better welds, I am not sure. I do OK on aluminum but I think it could be better, perhaps it's...

Just put it back in operation, seems to be doing much better, no hissing sounds no indication of much leakage, doesn't frequently recycle the burners and refill.
Seems like it went fairly well. Now I'll order a replacement.

Okay, I don't care particularly which route I take on welding or brazing it, just want to do what's best with it.Poland308 wrote:If you want to try brazing it, and if it is some kind of SS. Then you will need a filler that has 45% silver or higher. You can get it at any HVAC supply house, but it’s not cheap.
