That was clever using the 2 45's to make that valve into a straight run. I like it.

Yes, as the above mentioned. Sway bars are spring steel and for your intent, not weldable.

If your amperage is right you should be able to nearly bury the tip of the rod in the puddle and just "feel" your way up with a slight side to side weave. It takes a light grip on the stinger to be able to feel when the flux touches the sides, don't death grip it. "Feeling" you w...

The block is junk, the crack runs internal and into a cylinder wall. No wonder there was water in the oil.

Re: Mild steel roll cage etch test
There is nothing wrong with the 3/32 filler weld you got there. I'd roll a car at 120 with that weld. Maybe just a wee / tad / pinch more filler material but you don't want a big ole hump in your cross section either. Ideally you would want the cross section of your weld, penetration included, to be...

Re: Mild steel roll cage etch test
There is nothing wrong with that! If you step up to 3/32 rod you could probably do it in 1 pass, save a bunch of time and your HAZ will be much better. Your fillet is not oversized for the material, but a little less won't hurt, any more would be useless or counter productive. I'm assuming this is a...

Nice work for your first job, you built a mighty fine piece.
With your base now being open it would be a breeze to add a coolant system to your saw, your blades will last 2x as long or more.
A 115Vac sump pump, 5 gallon bucket, window screen, rubber hose, and galvi sheet metal to make a catch pan.

As a former employer, it is easier to find work if you have work. Being unemployed raises questions like "If you are so good or valuable, why are you unemployed?"
I eventually made everybody unemployed and went back to being a 1 man show.

Strip the galvanizing off with a coarse flap disk, then strip it again with a new disc to be sure it's gone. Look for a slight color change from silver (zinc) to pewter (steel). Strip at least 2" away from where you intend to weld. When welding, keep a fan blowing away from you on the other sid...
