For you guys that aren't pros.

Just the guys that weld for themselves. How often do you weld to keep staying good or as good as you can be?
I find that if I haven't welded for a while it takes a couple pounds of rod to get decent again. Tig well I probably will never get like some of you.

Re: Auto darkening helmet?

That one is out of my range for the amount of welding I do.
The one I have now is a Masterforce brand from Menards. No idea who makes it.

Auto darkening helmet?

Who's using one of these? Are they that much better? I don't weld much but these old eyes have a hard time seeing where to go.

Re: Why do my tig welds look like this

I had an issue similar a while back. Had a nice flex torch & it must have been flexed too many time & the gas wasn't going where it was supposed to. Changed to an old beater I had & it was fine.

It’s a gap... filing will only increase the gap.
my take is you'd sand/file the side that touches so as to bring them together...
That was the thought, thanks.

Preheat 1055 steel?

Replacing the cutting edge on a bucket with 1055. Does it need some preheat?

Re: TIG welding aluminum - no clear puddle, cleaning action

What kind of torch? When i tried aluminum I had a problem with my flex torch, I think something inside flexed too many times & broke & the gas was coming out someplace else. Switched torches & all was good, at least up to my ability. :)

No BOOM, didn't come out too bad for first time welding aluminum. Made some straps for it, instead of the tabs being bolted to the box.

Re: How much of a problem will this be? Fuel tank

Tank is apart & cut to size. Since I'm not an expert alum. welder, would it be better to use a a strip 1" to 1 1/2" wide & do lap welds instead of a butt weld? Might be less prone to cracking too? As far as the tabs for mounting, I don't have them bolted tight, but have a spring on...

I put this tank in the bed of my truck, not realizing it was too tall to keep the toneau cover on.
So I want to cut it down about 3 inches.

I don't have a modern welder, so I'm not sure what that is. I have a mid 80's Dial Arc 310.
