Re: 7018 on AC

So I tried for another half an hour today and found out new combinations of swearing I have never heard. I had two and half actual beads today as well. The slag doesnt like coming off very well though. I am just going to hope and ray we get a DC stick machine sometime. its been a few years since I ...

Re: 7018 on AC

Here's my story that sort of relates, tho not welding. I did forestry work here in oregon for 25 years, most of the welding I did in that time was patching up my beat up pickup trucks (paid 4 wheelin to boot, who could ask for more). A good bit of those years was tree climbing. In my first 2 weeks ...

Re: 7018 on AC

I did some work in an old coal breaker about 40 years ago, all they had was an old ac welder, I couldn't even guess who made it, someone said Westinghouse built it back in the 30s, but no one knew for sure as there was no tag of any kind on it. Anyway they busted the shaker frame, it was made out of...

Re: Bucket Welding

NR 211 is good wire for sure but NR 233 or 232 seems to work a lot better, got more tensile stenth and elongation to it from the paperwork they sent me for the different wires, and its what Lincoln recommended. 211 isn't recommended to be used over 3/8 or 1/2 inch thickness (I forget which) in most ...

cj... your saying that a spool gun will most likely work on my miller 12vs? that would be good...probly need some different rollers...I got hose and regulators for argon...I will have to get one of these spool guns and experiment with it...get this truck of mine done first though

Aluminum truck body

A coal hauler stopped this evening and asked if I would be interested in welding some aluminum liners in his dump body this summer when I'm done building my rig truck. Told him I might have time on the weekends, cant really say for sure as it depends on how hard these shovel operators beat up their ...

Re: Consumable companies

All of Lincoln's rods are made in Mexico. The 50# tin sealed with inert gas is higher quality for the perceived customer (commercial/industrial). The rods in 5# plastic boxes (NOT moisture-tight... plastic is stunningly permeable) are assumed to be for the hobbyist/homeowner/tiny shop crowd. Steve ...

Re: Consumable companies

So I needed some 7018 rods for this weld rig I am building and stopped at the hardware store...picked up some Lincoln rods in a plastic box... 5 lbs of em...they don't really run all that good...lots of splatter and whatnot...kind of shitty actually...the flux on the rod is a little lighter in color...

Re: School vs apprenticeship

A lot would depend on where in the welding you would like to end up in a few years, and the type of environment or shop you want to work in. There are things in this trade you will not learn at school. That nice clean piece of plate you've been welding on in school you will very rarely find if you w...

Re: Consumable companies

The real weld wire and rods will run a lot smoother and look better when complete, so it seems to me they would be a better quality weld I think, I don't use the big box stuff that much, but Ive used enough of it to notice the difference without even lookin which box they come from

Re: Bucket Welding

I deal with this crap all the time in the mines, best thing I found to do short of cutting the plate off and cleaning everything out behind it is run it hot if I'm using the self shielded wire, it will make bubbles of slag. Beat the crap out of those bubbles and then clean with a grinder and wire wh...

This is a pin boss on a PC 4000, took 3 pieces of old cutting edge and welded it on the top, bottom and the front side, back side didn't need it as it doesn't wear very much. Then built a deflector and put it on angle to protect it. If the pin boss wears off the keeper falls out, the keeper falls ou...
