Before you go to Lowes, let me point out Walmart will sell you a very similar torch set for nearly $100 less, and Walmart will take it back in 30 days if you're unhappy. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Stark-Portable-Victor-Type-Welding-Cutting-Torch-Kit-Oxygen-Acetylene-Tote-Carrier/984458682 You should...

How about maybe you give us a chance to find the machine's schematics by providing manufacture & model?

Definitely odd to have power & gas flowing without wire moving as well.

Re: Considering Hobart Institute Structural Welding Program

The man who does all my aluminum, 98% with a Cobra MIG rig on a Trailblazer power unit did probably half of the custom pipe hookups that went to the Winter Olympics in Italy, so he knows what he's doing. Danny's reputation leaked into the bike world, and the aluminum recumbant subset were lining up ...

For over 50 years, the two top schools in the country have been considered to be Hobart and Tulsa Pipe Welders. I'm currently sifficiently conversant with Hobart's school to know if ITW has cheapened and destroyed that as they have with everything else ITW has bought, so you'll need to do some diggi...

They definitely are either insane, stupid or operating in an area of very high unemployment. Whoever typed that description forgot do laundry & plunge plugged crappers too, and I bet the State Labor Department would take a dim view of requiring an employee to lift 100 pounds, even occasionally. ...

So, that pretty much translates to "I have no idea what I'm doing, although I'm being paid to do it. I'll check with the girl in your office and see if she can tell me what she thinks she wants" give or take. With a little luck this hands on part could result in testing with a machine your...

Re: Testing for a new job, but NOT a certification test

According to my supervisor, the tests will be given by the lead welding instructor at the local tech college. I don’t know how much “practical vs technical” knowledge will he be looking for. My welding history is mainly farm type repaires and fab. Minimal tooling, and materials. The only code I had...

May I strongly suggest visiting some press break tonnage tables before you build. Press breaks consume considerable force to make decent bends, and require proper frames.

Re: Etchant for Aluminum

Low concentration Phosphoric Acid (4 to 10%) in water is universally used to etch aluminum to create a grip structure for paint and coating adhesion in a tank setup. The key to what you're trying to accomplish is time on target. Try ketchup, vinegar and if you have to try phosphoric containing toile...

Re: Etchant for Aluminum

Aluminum is a funny animal, it ain't all the same alloy, and different alloys react differently to acids and bases. I'm presuming your goal is to take a slice of the failed weldment, polish it up and then employ an etchant to display the opening that is your leak. While you're using ordinary sandpap...

I got addicted to taters back when I was still wearin short pants in the war years when about everything was rationed. My wire chart says #9 steel wire is 0.148" roughly in the middle of 1/8 and 5/32. The rim to spoke welds look like they were spot welded, possibly doable with a stick machine + a contactor. The hub looks maximum 1/16 from what I can see in the picture. How it was stuck together? Could be somebo...
