Re: Tungsten Question
+1 for dirty aluminium opinion. I notice your welding in a used radiator (my trade). Even if you wash the inside out you'll still have a varnish so to speak of coolant and who knows what else. That tank is probably 14guage to 18guage depending on manufacturer. My guess is the contamination pulls fro...

Re: Torch consumables inconsistencies
Words of advice I got a few years ago from the repair tech at my LWS. "With consumables go all OE or all of 1 brand of aftermarket, don't mix and match or who knows what might be wrong" He also said the Chinese stuff can be wonky and sometimes you gotta mix and match to get stuff to fit pr...

For work on vehicles a CK flex lock can come in very handy.
Jody has a video from a while back showing some of the things it can do.
Pretty sure he welded a doubler inside of 2" square tubing with it.

Re: Tungsten sharperner for a hobbiest who wants the good st
Here's my setup. Got the bench grinder for 20-30 on sale and the wheel was 10-15 (can't remember the specifics.) The motor on the grinders not the strongest so it can be stalled out but not the worst thing I found when grinding tungsten. Keeps me from pushing too hard etc. The wheel is double sided ...

Ehhh even while tog welding a unprotected hose can pose a issue.
I've got multiple burn marks in my cover from where it was on a hot part while welding.
Not going to happen all the time but it still can so figured I'd throw that out there.

Re: Flexible Tungstens?
Seems weird but the more I think it the more I think of times I could have used something like that. Going down in a blind hole it could come in handy to direct the arc towards the edge rather than the center. Or one time when I was trying to get between 2 aluminium manifolds that had a small tube j...

Re: Porosity
I'm confused. He was welding with dc. Not AC What exactly would he be balancing? My point was more so that all sorts of weird things happen when those leads get swapped. It basically seemed like it flipped my whole machine around Your probably right about the no balance control though cause I think...

Re: Porosity
If your polarity was wrong and your were running dc ep, you would not be able to keep the end of your tungsten from burning away when striking up an arc. Was that happening? I had the same thing on a dynasty 400. I was able to get a arc (lift arc due to HF not functioning from backwards polarity) W...

Re: Furick Ally 5 question
I dont have that particular torch but I'd hazard a guess the insulator is held on by a rubber lip on the torch head. Sometimes can feel a bit stuck but try pulling on one side more than the other. May even need a small flat head screwdriver to "break" the seal on the lip so to speak. (Leas...

Re: Dye checking cracks
I always forgot about chemical strippers since usually our go to in the shop is sandblasting of it fits in the cabinet. (These tanks we're about the size of the cabinet) Will dig up the can of aircraft stripper we have for the next time and see how it does. Thanks for the tips! :) Sent from my Pixel...

Re: Dye checking cracks
Pretty sure I got mek in the shop. Will try that next time. Might have to see if I can soften with mek and get under the bulk of the paint with a scraper etc cause I have a feeling like it might take a while due to many many layers of paint on these old tanks but definitely worth trying if I get bet...

Re: Dye checking cracks
Makes sense to me. My kit has three cans. I believe cantesco is the brand. I'm just trying to figure out if I glazed over the surface of the crack during wire brushing the 3 or 4 layers of paint off this tank or if the crack just was not thoroughly flushed of diesel before I did my check. I know the...

Dye checking cracks
Was wondering if anyone had any tips for using dye penetrant to inspect cracks in steel.
More particularly I'm curious about paint removal prior to checking and anything that would help flush the crack beforehand of oil/diesel fuel.

Ahahaha don't blame you one bit, I'm the only guy at our shop crazy enough to run the tool. It's quite the tool to have in your hands knowing damn well of she bites bad things are going to go down real quick. Re: Building an aluminum radiator, any tips?
That makes perfect sense why one side is different then the other. If you want it to look the same it's quite easy to weld a channel to the side without one. And I know what you mean by first to respond it's the reason I get slot of jobs for random one of's the big guys don't even reply to that kind...

Re: Building an aluminum radiator, any tips?
And as far as disturbing the braze joint in the header it'sa pretty hard thing to do since youd need to have the tube joint up over 1000F. I used to have phone with a thermal camera on it and I'd take a pic after welding to see how things were and how the core pulled my heat in different ways. Hotte...

Re: Building an aluminum radiator, any tips?
Took a while but I found the receipt for the core. Wizard cooling in New York. That's kinda close to Michigan. I poked around their site a bit on lunch at work . It doesn't state if they make the core in house or if they have a 3rd party make it for them. But it does say 100% US built so it's proba...

Re: Building an aluminum radiator, any tips?
Hmm Michigan. I'm not aware of a aluminium core maker in Michigan. (I'm up in Canada) unless it was from TSM which has branches all over the States but makes all the aluminium cores down in Dallas. And as far as the heat goes there shouldn't be any cause for concern. I weld tanks directly to the tub...

Re: Building an aluminum radiator, any tips?
This is actually what I do for a living I build all types of radiator and coolers etc. So what type of core did you get? Is it a bar and plate? Or tube and header. If it's a header type what type of header are you welding to a flat plate or is it a turn up that you can slide the tank into? Sent from...
