Re: How to get a wider weld?
Thank you everyone. That helps a lot. I know that I was afraid to wait too long so im moving fast. The videos i've watched seem to move fast but ill slow down. Lower freq seems to work much better for me I just have to learn how to get a puddle and not totally melt the material. That seemed to be w...

Re: How'd I do on stainless?
That looks decent fwiw. My first thought is that for 16ga I would probably be running closer to 45 amps and holding a tight arc and moving quick. When you get into thin stainless such as 16ga always use aluminum backing if you can. Camp chill blocks everywhere you're gonna be welding it helps a lot...

Re: Using arc welder to heat steel plate for slicing lead sl
If your worried about bits when using a cutting torch you could try a rose bud and just heat a large pool then scoop it out with a casting spoon spoon for your fishing weights since it's 2-3" thick you could take a large swathe out of the plate and maybe make it more manageable. Or heat a line ...

I'd just put the wire in and try it. But that's just me being cheap ole me.

How'd I do on stainless?
So I'm curious if anyone more experienced in stainless has any pointers for me on the tricky nature of the stainless beast. The pictures are showing some welds I did on 16g stainless to 16g stainless (the pipe may be a tad thicker) all was with no back purge Settings were dc @65 amps no pulse with a...

Re: How to get a wider weld?
Me personally to get a wider bead I either turn my frequency down (not a huge difference noticed) Or I just sit till the bead is as wide as I want and then move forward to the next dab and rinse and repeat. I've done some pretty wide welds due to part fitup. Widest I can recall is about a 1/2" ...

Re: Cutting into Large fuel tanks
Definately a story that can be real.
In my area about 2ish years ago a highschool student died from cutting into a 55 gal drum to make a BBQ.
Not sure of the exact details just remember it was all over the news since it was at a highschool.

Re: Cutting into Large fuel tanks
Glad my thoughts may have helped.
I'd be wary of bringing another company in to do the clean unless they're also going to do the cut.
Just seen too many places half do things and say yup we did it 100%.
Just my personal opinion though.

Re: tig gloves + cleanliness
I usually have two pairs of gloves around while welding. Especially when I'm doing aluminium. One for the welding and he other older dirtier pair for moving things about. If it's something important then I'll grab a new set of gloves because re work sometimes isn't possible or it quickly exceeds the...

Re: Cutting into Large fuel tanks
At work to neutralize fuel tanks we have 3 methods we use and haven't had a issue yet. We either do a long and thorough steam wash after drilling a small drain hole in a way that the tank can be fully drained (if the tank doesn't already have a internally flush drain hole) Second method takes a long...

I had another thought that may help with fighting warpage. Mind you I already had a big plate at the shop with holes...

Re: Advice on pre-heating
If it'll fit I'd use a old bbq or oven if possible. If not I'd say use a rosebud on a oxy/acetylene rig if you got it. A #6 or 8 should suffice. As far as temp for cast Ally I'm not too sure. I would assume it matters on the metallurgy though. Someone else will likely come along and fill in that bla...

Re: ESAB Rebel - Spot Time setting
I've got the same setting on my Lincoln power wave c300. I've used it to do repeated tacks all of the same size. Also would be handy if say your doing many of the same weld over and over if your say welding a grid of some sort. Mainly I just use it as a method for tacking though when I want to keep ...

Re: Grounding for welding sheet metal repairs on a vehicle?
Whenever I've seen my brother doing any kinda body welding on vehicles he's always just cleaned a small spot on the pinch weld of the rockers and clamped there. Whether it's the best choice I'm not sure but he has always had good results with that method. As far as battery protection goes we actuall...

I've been using Walters ceramic coating now for approx a little over a year. Once my LWS convinced me it was worth the extra money I tried it out and have never looked back. Walters can has a neat applicator that helps get all the inside coated with the gun fully assembled.. just a little push and a...

As a side note if you didn't want to use a foot pedal in this build have you heard about or seen a tig button?
I have no clue if it would be easier or harder to get wired up to your machine but more options are usually nice so I figured I'd mention it.

Re: Anyone ever burnt up a tig finger?
Interesting, thanks for the links. Now to get my hands on some and ask the wife to sow it onto the backside of my tig gloves so I stop cooking my hands. Or maybe just wrapping my hand up is the route to go, probably use a couple tensor bandage clips to hold it in place. If I ever get around to doing...

I haven't melted one but I have caught all of them on fire. I know they "don't burn" but they really do and they get hot. I have 3 or 4 and they all do it. I let this one burn itself out. Hah first I've seen glass burn. More than likely it's the grease on the tig finger burning but I'm ju...

Re: Can I TIG weld copper?
Certainly is weldable. If you still got your PT185 then a preheat is more than likely required....But you mind find the pieces are so small it doesnt take long for the whole bar to get hot. Like others have said a piece of Romex house wire works well or better yet a piece of the parent material for ...

Could it be that since the bottom sheet is clamped down the table it is transferring more heat away from itself compared to the top sheet which is exposed before the chill lock comes into effect? I know from my braze and silver solder experience if I clamp something to the table the part needs more ...

Definitely leanig to some of my problems being from the core. Here's two pics both of the same unit. One if the corner seam weld of the tank which is very clean. Then the exact same tank welded to the core had alot of smut float in the weld. Guess its time for me to road trip 12 hours north to see t...
