Re: Anyone tried these on mill scale?
On the note of acids, we've used muriatic acid to strip mill/weld scale on welded tank assemblies. Works great at stripping scale etc, but the biggest conundrum we've run into is getting it neutralized before the rust starts. We only do it that way when the tank will be ton dipped for corrosion/ease...

Re: Cleaning after Walter Mill Scale Disk
Personally I don't bother with a chemical wipe down after the millscale disc. At most the plate will get a power wire brush down. I chemically clean with brake kleen(non chlorinated of course) or acetone, really whichever is closer I don't notice a difference. Then I go at it with mill disc and just...

Re: Inconsistant aluminum corner welds
On the topic of moisture/ condensation. My uneducated opinion on it is. Depends on your ambient start temp and your ambient humidity. Parts in the shop always behave different between summer and winter. I find that if I'm heating a part up in the winter it takes longer to 'truly' dry. Looks dry to t...

Pretty sure I seen the procon pumps available through arc zone.com. Don't remember the price but I rember thinking 'huh that's it? Why is a cooler so much then!?' Dont think I'd ever buy a new water cooler again, think I'd rather take a crack at making one since I build heat exchangers/reservoirs fo...

Re: Is anyone using the INOX type grinders?
Only real reason I can see to need one is if your planning on running things that need lower rpms on said grinder. Things like scotch brites, cheaper wire brushes with lower rpms ratings, the sponge abrasives etc. Or if you get into goopy material removal like undercoating/heavy paints that like to ...

Could always just buy/make the components and stick one together yourself. Really all they are is 1 tank 1pump 1fan(could even be a pump/fan combo with a dual shaft motor) 1 heat exchanger and some fittings and hose shoved into a fancy shell. Bet one could easily be built for under 500 as a simple o...

Re: Plasma cutting table fume extraction questions
I see alot of tables setup with a waterbath underneath, not sure if that's all there is too it, perhaps there's a smoke extraction ring around the table like a indoor bbq restaurant has built into the tables.
Might be something to look into since water is cheap and would catch the particles

Re: How hot does your tig torch get?
To be honest I'm pretty sure all water coolers are pretty well built the same more or less. All the ones I've seen run a procon pump and a copper tube/alum fin heat exchanger. (my older unit has a cellular style core like a 60's car heater core) My frist was a lincoln brand that quite literally fell...

Re: Crane safe runner cart - is it a thing?
I've never seen one available and I know my factory cart has no lifting points other than the eye on the top of the welder, if you've never popped the top cover off you might be surprised at how dainty that lift eye is, I know I wasn't too impressed by it and wouldn't trust the machine hanging off i...

I really hope that your company will be the one paying for that, not you. 100% it will be. I'm lucky to be one of the fortunate few where the company purchases 100% of what I say I need to do my job, as long as I can convince it's necessary. Sometimes though I just find I have to buy it and then sh...

Pretty sure that Evo 10 sliding miter is what I bought years back when we moved into our house and redid trim and woodwork etc. It does the task adequately enough, I've used it to cut a couple chunks of steel and copper with the standard blade that comes with it. Whatta a racket it makes and the cut...

Re: What's So Hard About TIG Welding?
In my opinion if you want to get better at Tig quick you should go get yourself some 1/8"+ thick alum and run beads on that. Things matter more with alu for your technique to give a good bead. Also as a side note, I find it way easier to see than a steel weld but some people says it's too brigh...

Re: Aluminium Mig welding settings
I've got a powerwave C300 at work, havnt done much alum mig with it.
Usually go with the panel settings and they seem alright to me.
I do find with steel though the recommended settings usually seem a tad cold to me.
Curious what you would set for say 3/8 to 3/8

With those gauges you've referenced I'd be curious about going down the rabbit hole of handheld laser welders that keep popping up in ads for me. Sorry I can't remember any brands or what not but they seam to do a decent job with thinner guage metals and the weld looks decent. Might be worth a Googl...

Like many here, I have used aluminum cutting blades on a right-angle grinder. Very dicey, but with massive concentration on what you're doing and where you're going, they are fast. This is what I use, they come with bushings to fit different arbors. You can't beat $14 bucks for what it does. I no l...

Just buy a isolator. The mechanics at work got this little gizmo box with two jumper leads they pop onto the battery while welding on the vehicle. They've been using it for years now and havnt had any issues. Well, it can't be a short so it must be an RF bypass - perhaps with over voltage protectio...

Used to run a 17 on a Lincoln 185. That torch would be near intolerable to hold at the end tail where the hose comes in at times for me at least. My hands got used to holding it but anyone else is the shop said they couldn't do it. Mind you I was redlining my 185 on nearly every job since it was und...

My opinion on it is, of you got the space for one is to find a well loved transformer machine that somebody is replacing for a modern inverter.

I am new to TIG welding I will only reply to the smallest tank. I bought an 80 cubic ft. tank it only lasted a week. When I went back for more gas and I asked about upgrading to a larger tank I was told that there is no exchange to a larger tank. I did buy the tank but I was hoping that there would...

Re: How to hold pieces of aluminum together to tack them
In a pinch you can even use tape or zip ties for a quick tack, or for bigger awkward items a cargo ratchet strap works as well as long as the part doesn't get too hot.
Also have used stainless safety tie wire in the past for weird shaped items.
