Re: What's up with my tungsten.
I'm just chiming in here. On the oil cooler welds is it possible that the oil from within is being drawn out from the heat of the tig torch and the cleaning action? I did a tank that had "something" in it and had porosity coming from somewhere even though I cleaned and cleaned before weld...

Re: Anyone ever burnt up a tig finger?
Those things are ridiculously difficulty to put on correctly. I have never been able to figure it out, so I just wrap it around my hand like a caveman and it definitely burns up I don't know I've never had a problem with them. Always just held it with my one hand and shoved some fingers in with the...

Re: What's up with my tungsten.
You can get small sanding pads that go on instead of the scotch brite pads. Yeah we've got them in a few different grits. I find 25k rpm and a sanding disc just load up with the powder coat and stop working if I try and do all the sanding with them. They're good for getting into the nooks where the...

Re: What's up with my tungsten.
I'm far from what I call expert and my boss tells me my welds are awesome also; I think not. From what I see in the pics is that you're using a grit type wheel on the material. I find that it can impregnate impurities causing issues with my welds and spits at my electrode sometimes. I've had bad el...

Re: What's up with my tungsten.
And noddy I think you may be onto something with the inferior tungsten thought. Here's a pic of a different tungsten from. The same pack that behaved much differently. I was only around 275amps on this cooler however so that probably has a part to play. Cheers for everyone's thoughts and ideas. Defi...

Re: What's up with my tungsten.
OK - given the nature of what your welding & the amount of inevitable contamination that boils out it's amazing how clean your welds are looking - I guess the main issue probably is just too many amps on the tungsten - as the limit is approached tungsten's don't always do the same thing - I've ...

Re: What's up with my tungsten.
And as a comparison here's what I. Welding right now. Building up the edge of a cast Ally CAC tank to takeup the gap due to different header styles. Also got a halfway decent pic of the tungsten doing the same sorta thing but not as bad. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190311/e65709ddc5ed7020b710...

Re: What's up with my tungsten.
So here's 3 different pictures of the welds. 2 not so great spots and 1 spot I think looks much better (cleaniness wise) also a overall of the whole unit. Unit is a hydraulic oil cooler that's been in service for years on a CAT wheel loader. Unit was originally powder coated which I sanded off with ...

Re: What's up with my tungsten.
While agreeing on all previous comments on tungsten size for given amps & balance is it just me wondering on the original post what that weld is we are looking at almost off the bottom edge of the image - it appears completely black & covered in scale - surely this says some sort of shieldi...

Re: What's up with my tungsten.
Well I don't think I've ever snapped a tungsten only ever cut with a zip disc. Could it be from not cutting far enough past contamination if I did or stick the filler rod to it? Don’t cut them, grind them in half using the edge of your wheel. The Dynasty should be 60-70% Balance, not 30. That’s way...

Have you used the problem tungsten brand on another machine without problems ? If you haven't already, try another brand or type of tungsten ; e.g 2% thoriated. https://www.thefabricator.com/article/aluminumwelding/choosing-tungsten-electrode-type-size-for-aluminum-gtaw " So what electrode sho...

Re: What's up with my tungsten.
Settings I was using we're 325amps EP and EN set equal. Frequency was 120hz Balance was 70% gas 100%argon at 30cfh in a gas lense with #8 alumina cup. you probably have done this, but test it with balance at 30% or swap the leads around. but otherwise i suspect, going by the charts, your amps are t...

Re: What's up with my tungsten.
Try changing the balance. Wow, 25 seconds is a really too long post flow No such thing. Too short, yes. Too long, can’t happen. Argon post flow provides two purposes: shielding the weld while it cools and cooling the tungsten to prevent contamination from the atmosphere. At 325 amps, 25 seconds is ...

Re: What's up with my tungsten.
Seems like a long time but isnt the old saying 1 second for every 10 amps? Least that's what I've always gone by when setting the old PT185. Now with the dynasty I just let it do it's thing cause a bottle of gas lasts enough jobs to keep the boss happy and it just takes one more setting out of the e...

Re: What's up with my tungsten.
Tungsten is either 1.5 or 2% lanthanated. Post flow I leave to be set by the machine.(Miller rep looked at me funny when I said I leave the setting to auto and let the machine do it's thing for postflow) If I'm not mistaken up at that amperage the machine was post flowing for around 25 seconds. I ca...

What's up with my tungsten.
Just like the title says what's up with my tungsten. Since getting my Dynasty I haven't been able to dial in some setting to keep my tungsten. Sharp, or a small shiny ball or hell even a big shiny ball that stays shiny. No matter what I seem to do my tungsten always goes funny and a dull grey with e...

Re: Anyone ever burnt up a tig finger?
Aye that's for sure. I've definitely cooked my hands doing mig a few times. And Even Tig before I got the xl fingers. Usually I dont notice till a hour or so later (hands are very used to heat from grabbing hot rad parts for years.) I still find it insane the amount of heat the tig arc puts off comp...

Re: Anyone ever burnt up a tig finger?
Hahahah well I think the best part is I didn't even feel he heat the whole time. I only noticed once I was all done the last pass and put the finger down on the table. Did about 8 feet of welding or so straight on this cooler. Only pauses were for either grabbing a new rod or flipping to weld the ot...

Anyone ever burnt up a tig finger?
Just like the title says has anyone ever burnt up one Jody's tig fingers? Was welding a oil cooler today 3/8-3/8ish @ around 325 amps(least what the machine was set at don't think I was full all the time) Anyways I get all done and looked at my tig finger and it had a hole melted into it. Just curio...

Re: Triple Threat - 4043 vs 4047 vs 4943 vs cast aluminum
I got a 1# tube from arczone.com not too log ago. Not sure if the price was good they were just the only place I could find 1#. Funny enough I talked with my LWS and they said they were having a hard time tracking it down. The arc zone stuff showed up then a day or two later my LWS dropped off a fre...

Re: Which Metal Cutoff Wheel is Best? Let's find out!
About 9 months ago I asked him to do a video on cut off wheels. To my surprise he did it! After seeing it, I then asked him to include Metabo, and Walter wheels. So let's see if he does it. Guys, write in a comment, below the video, and request what wheel you'd like to see. He has always replies ba...

That's what they say in the catalog, but I've used it then to gouge and groove, heavy deburring and even some pretty heavy shaping.
Only thing I don't like about them is the price!

Re: Tip size "guide"?
Actually measuring the orifice size isn't that hard. As long as your tips aren't super beat up. Get yourself a tip cleaning set. (Under $10) And get yourself a micrometer. Take the tip cleaner and just start putting them in til you find the snug fit (don't force it and end up making the orifice larg...
