Re: Welding 1/2 Plate

The way I welded my top to the table frame was to cut small wedges that I would insert in any gaps between the top and frame. Right next to the wedge I would put a tack. The wedge vastly minimizes tack shrinkage as well as the tack itself is so small that its pulling power is not much. I would work ...

Welding 400 series stainless

A very well known veterinarian horse surgeon has asked me to extend a retractor for him. The material is very magnetic and by my research this could fall into the 410-416 series SS which is used for surgical tools of this type. Anything special about welding it and what type of rod?

Thanks

Yeah, I deflowered it today. Had two or three wire overruns onto the table, I had to grind them off, but I knew this was going to happen anyway. :)

Re: Got my welding bench done (finally)

.....I want that vise! When I got the vise it was in pretty rugged shape. It was an outdoor vise down by the pacific. I had it sandblasted and painted then refit it with parts I modified. It was a fun job. I'm working on a Justrite flammables liquid cabinet that is in the same shape as the or...

Re: Got my welding bench done (finally)

How much you want for it? That is a nice table. Nice and heavy to. How'd you get the plate on it? Also, are you sure you have enough clamps? Well, I have about $1400 in it including the vise which I bought and totally restored it. I put the plate on with a forklift. Set blocks on the top of the fra...

Got my welding bench done (finally)

Well. it took a while but finally found enough breaks in the work schedule to git 'er done. 1-1/4" thk top 72" x 40" flat within about .010 overall and weighs in with the vise at about 1600 lbs. :) http://i410.photobucket.com/albums/pp189/Telecruiser1/DSC_0001_zpsjuxqbfa3.jpg http://i...

Re: Let's talk helmets, hoods, hats ...whatever you call the

Thanks Ace for doing that legwork, it's appreciated!

The Optrel and the Esab look real nice but I'll bet the replacement plastic, because of it's unique shape, is expensive. I think I'll wait for the Optrel to see its price and the reviews.

Let's talk helmets, hoods, hats ...whatever you call them.

I presently have a Jackson Nex Gen helmet that I've had for a few years and it just doesn't seem to be doing it for me as good visibility. I'm 67 and these ol' peepers ain't what they used to be. So, having said that, can you hot rods make some recommendations for a superior helmet? I am not too con...

Re: Preventing Distortion on Flat Plate

The first question I have is how much cupping are you willing to put up with. Second, what material is the 1/4" plate? Is it cold finished? If it is then good luck, never had any luck with that. If it is hot rolled (A36) you shouldn't experience very much cupping unless you need it absolute flat.

Re: How Did You Start Your Business?

One way to fail when starting a business is to say to yourself, "if this doesn't work out I can always get a job". Make a commitment that there is no backdoor, you're in it for the long haul. Otherwise I wouldn't bother.

BTW, that's how I did it. I got started and never looked back.

Re: How Did You Start Your Business?

One thing I will tell you that I learned the hard way and you will probably think you knew. Here it is - Do you know what a business is? You think you do but I'll tell you. A business is a machine to make you money and that is all . Always keep your focus on making money and do the things it takes t...

Ok, I knew going in this was going to cost some money but it was more of a personal project. Here goes - First, I dismantled to vise completely Second, I inspected all the parts. The screw was in good shape but the bolster was real rusty as well as the handle as well as bent. Third, I sent the big p...

Why can't you use just one size tungsten?

The title says it. Why can't you just have an 1/8" tungsten and do just about every job from thin to thick? Why does using a1/16" tungsten on thin material at low amperage any different than a larger one?

Re: Looking for cable cover/protector

I recently bought a Miller 252 package which came with their 30A spool gun. All the cables/hose look on the spool gun durable but I would like to cover them with something light but protective. I have seen the zippered and velcro types but I'm looking for what I used years ago for TIG torch cables....
