Re: Lincoln pipe welders
I ran 6 8 inch pipe joints in 6g position today with the vantage 300. I couldn't tell the difference with the open root pass from my old miller dialarc hf, but when it came to the hot pass, I loved the control I had with the vantage. The arcforce adjustment seems to give great control to the bead pr...

Re: Lincoln pipe welders
I'll probably start out with something cheaper like a trailblazer or ranger, then move up to a diesel powered machine after I've had the job for a few months and confident it will be a long term thing. Inverter type vs old transformer type is a great debate I want to hear from the pros about. I'm pi...

Lincoln pipe welders
Been practicing pipe. My 30 year old miller aead200le is just not cutting it. I want to get a job pipe welding and a new welder. I'm going to rent a vantage 300 today. I've got a bunch of 8 inch sch 40 all preped and ready to try out the high tech inverter type from lincoln, but I think I'm leaning ...

Re: How to figure volt/amp curve
Musical timimg would help. I should get a metronome like a beginning musician. I have to right everything down or I can't remember what worked and what didn't. I too keep a weld log lately so I can repeat settimgs that worked. I'm still working on my engine driven legend. It sat for years unused and...

Re: How to figure volt/amp curve
I'm not using whip and pause with the 7018. I have the best looking welds with a 15 degree drag angle and very little manipulation. I do much better with stringers than weave. 6010 and whip and pause is what I'm trying to learn now. I thought I would pick it up quicker, but still working it. I made ...

Re: How to figure volt/amp curve
That's the 1/8 6010 5p+. I'm running the 7018 a bit hotter at medium coarse and 90 fine. That would work out to 175 amps. Seems a bit hot for 1/8 rod, but actual current might be lower. I haven't tried any open root welds yet, just stacking beads in flat position and lap joints in flat position. I'm...

How to figure volt/amp curve
Hi guys, I'm practicing for a 6g test. Want to become a pipe welder, but realise I need lots of practice before embarrassing myself. The 7018 I've used a bunch in the past is looking pretty good, but the 1/8 6010 5p+ is difficult to learn. My machine is an old Miller dialarc. The 3 coarse ranges for...

Re: New member
Thanks guys. I just picked up a bunch of 6 inch schedule 40 at 2 inch long. I'm going to make a setup to bevel the edges then practice. I'm going to be using my dial arc until I get my legend running right. I got the stuff to make a fume extracter in my garage as smaw is too smokey. I don't mind tig...

Re: Cover pass
Is the 6g test with 5/32 6010 root and 3/16 8010 fill and cap? All down hill? What is the best height to practice with? 4 or 5 foot off the ground or does it matter? I was going to get some 6 inch schedule 80 to practice. How much gap? How big a bevel? Sorry for all the basic questions, never been t...

Re: New member
There is no way I'm ready for a 6gr test yet. Never used 8010 so I need to practice. It should run similar to 6010 I'm guessing.

Hello everyone. My name is Charles. I taught myself to stick weld about 30 years ago with a miller legend in the construction trades. I'm recently looking to get back into the trade doing pipline stuff in the oil/natural gas industry in Colorado. I still have my old miller that I'm rebuilding the ca...
