Re: I apologize...

I forgot to add this-don't apologize for this-doing something you want to do that is. As for another thing-what the hell does thespian mean? Thespian is another word for "actor". It comes from the name "Thespis", which I presume comes from ancient Greek [Edit.. Thespis was a Gre...

For those of you who have not been playing along with the home game, I have a significant distraction from the amount of time I normally spend here. This will continue until July 23. I can catch up on weekends, but during the week my time here will be somewhat limited. [Correction] After July 7, I'l...

first rehearsals were held today. It's stunning to see it come together from the inside like this! So far, I'm having the time of my life. This is great fun. I'd never have dreamed I'd see it that way. When the lights come up, I'll be the first person the audience sees. Steve get some video for us ...

I did not. I did share this idea from a friend. It was his trick for keeping his tools from rusting at a shipyard.

Re: Manganese plate

Yes, if it's done GMAW, and a stainless wire (whether 309, 312, or 340), you're going to want Tri-mix gas, 90% He/7.5% Ar/2.5% CO2. It's the best way to generate the heat it will take to penetrate.

Olek,

I use the professional products, specifically the MagnaFlux brand, very often. I'm interested in how the "home-brew" version works, and from what you said, and what Jeff did, it seems quite successful.

Re: Manganese plate

It sticks in my mind, for some reason, that 312 is the better choice for this, but I have nothing to back up that suggestion other than a gut-feeling from a vague memory. Lacking evidence, 309 is always a good choice for dissimilar alloys.

Jeff,

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the homemade dye-penetrant. While Jody talked about it, he didn't demonstrate it.

Hell, non-stick cooking spray will protect the parts for cheap. An acetone wipe or two will clean it right off.

Thanks, Nick, Here's my quandary... The theater seats MAYBE 100, I haven't counted, and the seats are all (ALL!) top quality leather and extremely comfortable. Tickets are typically $30 for adults, which is reasonable for professional theater, but a little high for community theater. I'm not sure I'...

Welcome, Chewy, I know it's sounding trite to say, "Thank you for your service", but I'm saying it anyway. My dad retired from the Navy, and one uncle was the first operational casualty of VF-17 "Jolly Rogers" in 1943. My dad actually did a two-year tour in 1933-35, then re-joine...

Welcome, Rafe, I love the glass arts, and once applied to apprentice at a neon shop. I was one of several, and didn't stand out at that age, so I missed that opportunity. I've manipulated glass and enjoy the nature of it. I look forward to seeing how you combine your new metal skills with neon! I al...

Welcome, olek, Don't fear the language barrier. It has yet to be an issue. In the worst case, we have a few Quebecois here that can help if something gets lost in translation. I despise "progressive" lenses for welding. I use simple bi-focals exclusively, and my glasses for work have the m...

Well, amazingly, one place you might find me is at Playmaker's Theater in Covington, LA. I got a wild hair, stepped out of my comfort zone, and auditioned for a play. A musical production of Saturday Night Fever. I'm 48 and have never been in theater at all, so I thought that was the end of it. Thur...

I have the incredibly rare blessing of completely unlimited access to helium. One of our clients provides whatever we ask for because I use it in leak detection.

A very well known veterinarian horse surgeon has asked me to extend a retractor for him. The material is very magnetic and by my research this could fall into the 410-416 series SS which is used for surgical tools of this type. Anything special about welding it and what type of rod? Thanks The weld...

Don't mean to sound like an ass. But I don't think there is a nut shell big enough. Believe Steve is working on setting up procedures for where he works. Slightly different scenario but same size effort needed. I know there's a lot of paperwork and that you need to be knowledgeable about the code b...

If you want the broadest range of jobs you can work, SMAW/stick is the way to go. I wouldn't stop studying other processes, but if you re-read what I posted, lots of broad stick experience helped lead me where I am today. A person talented in 6010/7018 basic pipe can find good paying work anywhere i...
