Re: Why so much doc say DCEP is more penetrant?

Resistance is your air gap. Or arc length. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electroplating Electron flow plays a part in deposition rates. you mean electron direction favor some sort of molecular "grabbing" of the metal ? I did understood it was mostly a mechanical process, faster impacts ...

Re: Why so much doc say DCEP is more penetrant?

Thank you Dave, this make sense and goes along with what I suspected ;). So electrically there "SHOULD" be more penetration with dcen but practically dcep wins . Keep in mind, this is true for stick welding. For TIG welding, the penetration is on DCEN as would normally be predicted. Thank...

Re: 7018 basic tips

Poor rod angle, too much amps, too much arc force, left over mill flake, and travel speed are all possible causes of undercut. These aren't the only causes, but the most likely. Good , too much arc force is in th list ;) arc force 10 https://goo.gl/photos/xmRQubDDPJ3CegHx6 What is arc force for, is...

Re: Why so much doc say DCEP is more penetrant?

They do it from r control. Think about electron flow. Direction of movement of the electrons will make a difference in how the material deposits. Electro plating is a slower process but the same principle. Thank you Josh but can you "vulgarise" for me ? electron flow with DCEP the electro...

Re: 7018 basic tips

May be that is not the good name I see too much groovr6 ( canal) at the top edge of an horizontal fillet ( first pass) or when raising vertically in triangle shape I thought also that I had too soft metal , as wrought iron , sometime. It happens also ( less often now ;) on the top edge of horizontal...

Re: Why so much doc say DCEP is more penetrant?

Thank you Dave, this make sense and goes along with what I suspected ;). So electrically there "SHOULD" be more penetration with dcen but practically dcep wins . The welders that use dcen for root pass do that only because of the shape of the mold I suppose, possibly more controlable root ...

Why so much doc say DCEP is more penetrant?

Hello DCEN gives a sharper shape to the weld and more heat within the metal. (70% of the heat is in the metal) DCEP gives a flatter shape to the weld, and 70% of the heat is on the electrode (only 30% on the metal then) A welder told me he use DCEN for root pass wen using 7018 (6010 are almost unuse...

Re: 7018 basic tips

I have to understand what does arc force when looking at the amp provided. I am digging strong and create undercut if I have more than 30 arc force so I font know how to use it

The maker of my welder told me to put it at 10 if it is annoying.

Re: 7018 basic tips

Thanks Dave, I will examine, but at 115 it seem to be cooked enough. I will give a try . ( this is on relatively thin steel too, about 6 mm ) Now if one weld at 130A with arc force at 30% and dragging is not that meaning he use about 150A or more (arc force "on" permanently ?) I did experi...

Re: 7018 basic tips

Anyone could give me some ideas on why if I have the "arc force/dig " function at 40% I tend to stick more easily than at 10% I thought that it is an "anti stick" system, that add power if my electrode touches the puddle so it reduce in lenght immediately and arc lenght is lenght...

Re: Weaving vs stringer and tips for a 3G test

4G SHOULD be harder . My friend who welded pipes some time ago say 3g is "easy" because we are guided (making beads or stingers vertical on a flat surface is more difficult, while with a corner or a 60 deg angle the walls are used to mount the beads.) @farmwelding, if you may want to keep ...

Re: Eliminating Arc Blow

I did read the Lincoln document. It is not very clear to me but mas be the language barrier. I noticed it say that nickel is very permeable to magnetism, I have 95%nickel rods that always make an unstable arc, make me think of testing them with the "gaUssmeter" of my telephone, and if clea...

Re: 7018 storage

I did notice there are plastic cans intended to store the electrodes immediately when they go out of the oven. Not all containers can accept the huge temperature. Plus they are 45 cm tall and you can store 7 Kg of electrodes sealed in those. (May be TIG electrodes too) They are not very expensive ( ...

Hello 6 @farmwelder : too bad it did not work with other tables ..but if you try to read a thesis on remanent magnetism and arc blow (I find some, and you can read only the abstract fof each chapter and the experimentation part , passing formulas and computations) you can obtain causes for arc blow ...

Re: saving shop space

I gained space by using spring balancers so my electric cords and many tubes come from the ceiling. There are chinese cery cheap balancers that ar good to store in upoer position electric screwdriver, drill, some hand tools. I also made a movable "bridge" with 3 supports intended for doors...

New steel is expen...

Re: 7018 basic tips

Thank you, comments appreciated ;) I would tend to think that I did not keep the puddle protected enough ( may be a slightly longer arc than I wished too ). Re: Weaving vs stringer and tips for a 3G test

I'm using my "welding bible" as a reference on this one. Basically it says welding stringers are easier to lay down and CAN be as strong as weave beads. Weaves being done correctly, the bead should not exceed more than two times the rod diameter. After reading that, for tests during schoo...

Re: How to figure volt/amp curve

HI, when I tried to copy the whip and pause from videos, I counted a 3 steps measure, as in music, that gave me a very even progression when I did try to reproduce the motion, counting 1,2,3 But I am musician, may be it helps ;) Good point to take notes, I made a welding note book , but alas, I tend...
