7018 basic tips
Hello I am learning how to use 7018 actually, different from the 6013 I have been mostly burning (plus some 99 Ni on iron, but that is another story ;) I am "advanced beginner, very dedicated, since 45 days almost no day without some exercice , I did burn about 800 electrodes so to say ;) 7018,...

If you use silicate bags with no colour test, you simply need a good balance.
A bag that weight 10g when dry will be about 14 g when saturated.
I suggest this can be precise enough to know when to cook the bags.

Re: How to figure volt/amp curve
Hello About 7018, I did read recntly that whip and pause is not considered good practice, because the risk of loosing gas shield hence obtaining porosities I think this was from Lincoln instructions, may be ESAB WHat do you think ? That is correct, whip and pause is for 6010 and 6011 Thanks, I am l...

Re: How to figure volt/amp curve
That's the 1/8 6010 5p+. I'm running the 7018 a bit hotter at medium coarse and 90 fine. That would work out to 175 amps. Seems a bit hot for 1/8 rod, but actual current might be lower. I haven't tried any open root welds yet, just stacking beads in flat position and lap joints in flat position. I'...

Re: PITA Cast Iron Repair
it works certainly at an accepteable quality level, (some said they never used the commercial products, but other answered that they are available since 40 years at least ;) I suspect the size of the particle of the white "reader" spray is what ameliorate the precision. I use different ver...

Re: Eliminating Arc Blow
from some thesis on arc blow and remanent magnetism, I understood that mass location can help by pushing from it toward the electrode (and the nearer the better) but the big part of arc blow is due to the magnetic circuitry in the piece you weld plus its support. I was said "put the mass where ...

Re: PITA Cast Iron Repair
Hello, I missed that one, but before finally buying 2 spray for about 25 USD, (and no regrets) , I did have a thread on that subject of "old times crack control " essentially the penetrant can be red gasoil as we use here for trucks, then 30 minutes later cleaning , and using talcum or any...

Re: PITA Cast Iron Repair
Hello I was "strongly" suggested to use nor 312 but 29/9 electrodes (inox repair electrodes) if stick welding cast iron. just for you to know, I did not try at that point but the information comes from a retired professionnal that used it preferably to the 99 Ni, or bi metal FeNi . he use ...

Re: 7018 storage
hello , great boxes you have there, I never seen of that sort, I did exchange with a formula engineer from a well known electrode maker (selectarc, I am in France) He told me that 7018 type accept to be cooked at 662 F for 30 hours , that mean about 15 cookings without degradation. but also, if they...

Talking about cooking some electrodes
Hello, I think it is a somewhat delicate subject, instructions for cooking on electrode boxes ask for long times and high temperature. As I needed more insight I interviewed engineer from Selectarc, an electrode maker, and learned how I could damage some electrodes with too much heat, burning the ce...
