Re: Thin Aluminum Overlap
Looks good to me, you don't want to see too much penetration (heat input) and I think you did well What is the base material (6061?) and what filler? Will this part get anodized? Base material is the 5052 and the filler rod 4043. I've already been told that it would be better to use 5356 filler but...

Re: Thin Aluminum Overlap
I would say you don't need so much penetration, but I would also ask is this for a customer? If so what are their requirements? Is there an aesthetic reason you don't want to see penetration on the back side, if this is for yourself I'd say without any other info about this weldment you're okay I d...

Thin Aluminum Overlap
I am welding a lap joint between two aluminum sheets, 2mm (top) and 1.5mm (bottom) and always end up with some degree of penetration through the 1.5mm sheet. I have read somewhere that for lap joints penetration is not necessary. I ask: If penetration occurs, is it wrong? Is it better? It's worse? C...

Re: DIY TIG foot pedal
FWIW, I converted an ooold foot pedal to "modern" standards: Cool!!!! I find this system using gears one of the best. Great job. I'm already using the pedal I built. It works perfectly. My doubts are how long it will work before showing any problems and if I am using it correctly, since I...

Re: DIY TIG foot pedal
Looks nice, what will the retail price be? I did not intend to commercialize it. Also I'm not sure if I will adapt myself to using it. I've been welding steel for at least 2 years and recently started welding aluminum boxes (1.5mm sheets) and I started to think that a pedal could make my job easier...

Re: DIY TIG foot pedal
Redone engineering. -All moving parts are bearings. -Weight (pressure) on the pedal is 4.5 pounds at the end of the movement (max current). -Electric insulation with milled nylon blocks. -Sliding pot rather than rotary pot (easier mechanic and higher resolution). I looked at several pedal pictures o...

Re: DIY TIG foot pedal
Thanks all. Yes grounding the cable shield is a nice idea. I am doing some modifications. This will be one of than for sure. I am doing a heavy insulation for the internal components and wires also. Better safe than sorry :x The second pot... My machine (and many others) disable current pot when it ...

DIY TIG foot pedal
I built my own TIG pedal this weekend. I've tested it and it's working as it should. My concern is about insulation versus compromising the machine. Explaining: The pedal I built is entirely made of metal. The electrical insulation between the pedal housing is the standard, meaning, wires and the no...

Re: Thin aluminum
AndersK, good ideia.
And what about "Tig Finger"? Anyone knows the material used?
Edited...
I did not see any penetration on the back side of aluminum. Using 60A and was already very difficult to avoid burning the edges.
Is this right?
Thanks.

Re: Thin aluminum
No clamps was used. And just a few tacks 3 or 4 in a 35 cm extension. Next time I´ll double the tacks and buy some long clamps. You are sure a did a lot of deviations to refill the burned edges.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Thin aluminum
Hello all again.
Trying some overlaps on thin aluminum 1.5mm. I don´t know why but seems to be much more difficult then a butt joint using the same thickness. Probably the weld is good but it is VERY ugly. What i´m doing wrong?
By the way... 60A for the bead.
Thanks all.

Re: Thin aluminum
Nice!
We are doing a lot of carbon steel welding today. Tomorrow I´ll restart my tests on aluminum. Then I´ll take some pictures.
Thanks.

Re: Thin aluminum
Hello all. I´m back. I´m not sure about my skills with TIG welding aluminum so... We decide to rent a machine instead buy one for a while. Today, I did my initial tests using a lot of 1.5mm thick aluminum rectangles. My first impression... TIG welding carbon steel IS PRETTY EASY!!! Ok, my prob...

Re: Thin aluminum
Like i said, I have no experience with aluminum yet, but we do a lot of steel motorcycle fenders, extending it. Does not matter the way I do, always have some degree of warping. Needs a hammer sometimes to fix it and filler before the paint job. Maybe due the shape. I do tacks all over the piece fir...

Re: Thin aluminum
Yes will be butt joint most of the time all long runs 30 to 50cm. Some corner joints but no gaps or very little ones and short runs. I'll try this tip for sure. For the long runs, how far can I go each time to avoid a lot of warping? I have no experience welding aluminum. For carbon steel on thin sh...

Hello all. I´m from Brazil and a beginner welder. Weldingtipsandtricks is my learning guide for a least an year. We have a motorcycle customize workshop. Here are some of machines customized by us https://www.facebook.com/FiftyNinersCustoms (sorry portuguese only). This is only an introduction. Ok.....
