Re: first time aluminum tig

Your arc length is too long, causing porosity. Clean your surfaces a bit better another cause of porosity. Your end weld looks better. A great start though.

How much amperage? Looks like your torch distance wasn't constant. Try using more amps and shorten your arc length.

Re: another newb intro

Don't learn on stainless steel. Use carbon steel. Its much more forgiving. Stainless sucks up the heat immediately and you had better be Stewart Copeland with the pedal if you're learning. For those that are old (like me) or who don't care for that kind of music: Stewart Armstrong Copeland (born Ju...

Re: Harbor Freight Vulcan.

I bumped into the local welder repair guy at the local welding shop the other day and we got to talking about welders. Basically what I was told was that if you own one of the newer machines, when one of the boards needs replcement it's going to be at least $800 plus labor. His advise was to sell m...

Re: First beads

I love your persistence! Keep going; the only way to learn. Your beads aren't bad for the first time. They show a lot of promise. Watch Jody's videos, order (from Jody) some 2% laninated tungsten, keep you tungsten close to the puddle, back off, on the pedal towards the end of the bead, and practice...

I've read that too. It is also associated with diabetes; though, I don't have that. The surgeon and hospital is going make 23K for a hours work. Wish I could make 1/10 of that!
I won't be welding for at least a month, while I heal. Not looking forward to that.
Thanks for your reply

Re: Welding in your basement

My opinion, only single guys weld and do woodworking in the house :D The grinding is harder to control than the welding. The smell is hard to control. The woodworking dust is hard to control. The noise can't be controlled. Build a nice shop so your vehicles don't have to sit outside in the winter -...

Has anyone have or had Dupuytren's (trigger finger)

In two weeks I'm going under the knife to repair my dominate hand, for trigger finger. Dupuytren's contracture occurs when tissues in your hand thicken. The thickened tissue may form cords that extend from your palm to your finger. The cord may shorten, and your palm or finger may become stuck in a ...
