Re: Grainy AL welds

I often get the same outcome when I use 4043 filler. I've noticed that when I switch to 5356, the graininess goes away with the same settings. A friend of mine told me too much heat even after I get the puddle and move along, probably not fast enough. I'm still in my learning curve that from what I'...

Re: aluminum penetration

I hate to keep yapping on this but I suppose my problem is seeing how deep my puddle is. I can make great looking welds in aluminum but when I try to get a lot penetration I either get a WIDE bead or end up with something from outer space like a klingon space ship. Is it all practice? and when I get...

aluminum penetration

welding 3/16 Al, 3/32 blue tungsten, 3/32 5356 filler. 20cfh argon, 150 amps, 100 Hz, 30% balance on everlast 205si machine. I can get the filler to flow into the corner joint. Does this mean that I am getting proper penetration? Also during butt joints it doesn't seem that I get total penetration e...

Re: Wire feed help

I received a couple rolls of wire from a friend and keep them out in the barn. There is absolutely no water getting in there but I've found there is enough moisture in PA to affect the top layers of the wire. I don't have containers large enough to store the wire and have been plagued with some corr...

Re: Everlast 255ext help!!!

I have an everlast 205si and do find that using 4043 filler makes the weld look glazy and seem to have sugar in the weld. I also find that once I get the puddle formed I have to start MOVING . I am welding 3/16 aluminum. I do clean the aluminum with acetone, brush with stainless brush, and more acet...

Re: TIG torches etc... so many options?!

When I first bought my tig machine, I was air cooled using a 26 torch. Watched my brother with his water cooled torch and had to have one. Bought a 20 torch and cooler. Got to really liking that...no hot fingers. Had to weld some heavy stuff and used the 26, turning the cooler off. Went back to the ...

Re: Welding in China 6061 t6 unable to weld

I tried to find a manual for this welder and could only come up with R-Tech 315 ac/dc. It is not exact, but pretty close and may give some insight on the controls. the picture seems to me that there is no shielding gas evident or the wrong gas. Be sure you have the tig torch set up correctly and the...

Re: Lead welding using TIG

NOT sure on this one but back in the day when rain gutters were tin they used to solder the joints with a hot iron and just kind of melt things together. It would probably be more like tig brazing. The hot iron was heated with hot pot type of heater and the iron was laid into the flame. Kind of like...

oh crap, I don't want no wars. I'm just trying to get ideas that might help from loosing a clearance issue and having wobbly wheels. Demented, you're NOT supposed to crash, let alone on 2 wheels. I've been there , done that, BADLY. So, If I get this slotted area just with a bead, I should be ok. The...

thanks LT. I'm just getting old and cranky over the total waste of the "funds" that are taken from the working class. If there isn't a tax already on an item, they will come up with a new one, but, they don't call it a tax. They've come up with new terminology to make it look like the gov ...

I've been working with 3/16 aluminum and building shooting benches. I have in mind to make a bench with retractable wheels on the front legs. There is a clearance issue that I was wondering about. Where the axle for the wheels slides in the slot I made for the axle in the leg ... IF I just run a bea...

Re: 1/16" Mild Steel Square Hollow TIG Settings

try starting right on the end of the piece. By the time you get heat generated in the middle of the piece, you have to move like you're on fire or stop the arc. Don't start welding yet til you get the feel for the puddle and moving the torch. Stay close to the piece until the puddle forms then lift ...

Re: 1/16" Mild Steel Square Hollow TIG Settings

I believe that you stated that you are using a torch button switch. I've found that with the heat that high and using the button switch, I can't control the heat - once it's established. I have also noticed that once I've got the heat running I have to really get moving or I'll blow thru. Maybe turn...

I have also been trying different tungsten just to see what the outcome would be. It seems that the green (pure tungsten) gives the hardest problem starting. At first it begins like lightning in the sky at lower amperage during start, then settles down as the amperage increases with pushing the peda...
