Re: What welder to buy
The welding machine is more work you plan to do. When had shop I used large transformer type with 100% duty cycle. Today I small at home shop so a small mig welder. If I want to do tig welding I would buy a tig welder for work and would not buy a all on machine. Just more to go wrong. Less electroni...

Welding companies do make rod and wire for rail.snoeproe wrote:Something to keep in mind. The rail road companies never ever weld on track with electric arc welding processes. There’s a reason for that.
The rail road dose put exspandtion joints and use thremal welding joints to safe on labor.

Re: 1/2" AR400 plate weld to railroad track
It's not too bad. $200 for 50lbs of Hobart E11018. A 50lb tin of 7018 is $130-150 anyways. What's $50? If only 10 or 20 pounds that would be costly. Still not cheap Back 1960's and 1970's welding supplier you could buy by the pound. You can buy flux core wire it may come in 30 pounds but last time ...

Re: 1/2" AR400 plate weld to railroad track
The right way is to uses E11018-D2 and per heat to 200° Now E11018-D2 is high cost Most time you use E7018 and per heat to 250°. The rod need per heat for a few hours above 250°. What way you go per heat the metal above 250° then weld Dave I'm looking to weld 2 pcs of 1/2" thick AR400 to the to...

You like the 240 volt it will give a better weld. Most try weld to close to metal using flux core . Try a stick out 3/8’ to 1/2' [8 to 12 mm] . I use E71T-11 0.030 [0.8mm] wire Dave Hey all, new to the forum! I guess this is kind of an intro too? My name is Brandon, and I'm trying to get better at w...

If planing welding all time I would buy a CV welding transformer and wire feeder. A all in welder is great for small shops. When I shop all is I use transformer CV and wire feeders. Used 60 pound coils. The wire feeders would take 300 pound drums. I also used a track torch machine for 80 foot welds ...

I got myself an acetylene outfit, but I plan to use it with propane for the most part. I am getting acetylene mainly for flame-straightening, but I might conceivably do a small amount of welding. The propane is for cutting and general heating. I plan to keep the torch on s cart with oxygen and prop...
