Just remember it's not really all about timing, the movements are also based on what you see the puddle doing. Wouldn't the instructor be able to show you the proper way to do it and then watch and coach you? It's really the fastest way. Hmm... I typed out a reply earlier, but not seeing it now. Oh well. Yes, the instructor ran a couple passes for us, but it's hard to see with 10 guys crowded around one ben...

Complete n00b here - well, almost. Did some Oxy/Acetylene stuff in high school but that was 35 years ago. Enrolled in a local Jr. College welding class and yesterday was day 5 under the hood.
