Re: Farm to Urban Welder
I think its a mostly using common sense. Have multiple fire extinguishers on hand. Know where they are. Other than that. Up to you for what you're comfortable with. I only tig in my garage with the door open and a welding curtain and fan running. Everything else is done outdoors on my outdoor table....

Looks good.
Any reason you added that 5th cap bead? Its hard to tell from the photos but it looked like you were done capping after the 4th.

Re: 304 work hardening.
Stainless can be pretty malleable. That series stainless will work harden if allowed to get too hot while machining. What technique are you planning to use for forming? That will allow me to better answer your questions. Cutting with tin snips, cold forming, clamping, hammering, then welded, and ad...

Also swapping out the rod for the tube was totally worth the hassle and made it much more rigid. Thanks for that suggestion CJ.

Here is a quick update, from last weekend. Been finishing it up this weekend with some final tweaks and the threaded inserts and stuff. It ain't perfect, but I made a thing and had some fun.
Any and all feedback welcome. Cheers folks.

Grinding vs Filing Dust
I've always been curious how hazardous hand filing dust/shavings are. I'm not even sure the by products of filing are called dust or filings, but you get the idea. Obviously grinding dust, belt dust, wheel dust, etc is horrible for the lungs and that is why we wear respirators. Are there any risks t...

Re: Scrap Slab Bench
Did you simply put a brace between the two legs? If so that's not going to offer nearly the strength you would get if you went on a 45 up to the Underside of the table. Ya I went with CJs suggestion, but I ended up cutting it out since it wasn't offering the rigidity I was looking for. I test fit e...

Re: Scrap Slab Bench
I went with a stretcher using 1/2 inch solid round through the intersection. It is certainly better than without, but I wouldn't call it rock solid though. I think hollow tube would have been better as mentioned. I may dig around and see if I have some tubing long enough, I can always cut the bar ou...

Re: Scrap Slab Bench
Epoxy is pretty sensitive to cold temps. If your raw components weren't warm, or the ambient temps were chilly, it will thicken up like syrup from a VT maple tree. Ya that's exactly what happened. Its been about 40/50s F so certainly not ideal for epoxy. To everyone who commented ideas. Thank you. ...

Scrap Slab Bench
My neighbor sold me one of his scrap wood slabs, so I decided to make a bench out of it. Its a little narrow and could be made into a hallway table eventually, but I didn't have enough similar material lying around so went the bench route due to shorter lengths of tubing required. The legs are 1.5 i...

Re: Storing Welding Electrodes
If you're not doing code work, and if you may not be doing professional-level work where 7018 is required, recommend you give some thought to running something like 6013 or 7014. They are arguably easier to run, and don't have the stringent storage requirements. Not trying to assume your needs, tho...

Re: The ultimate TIG gas flow
Just going to throw this out there.
I think that its rad that you took the time to question the 2x rule and calculate it to verify for yourself. Tig gas flow is as easy as turning it up or down if its not giving you results, but still a good exercise to come to your own conclusions. Well done.

Re: Buying a Tig welder to use at home
There are many that dismiss the latest entries of these lower cost, AC/DC TIG units from Asia. Sure, they aren't "pro quality" or "production level" machines, but for 99% of what a hobbyist, side-hustler does, they'd likely pay for themselves in 2 jobs. I don't dismiss the pract...

Re: Abrasive Grinding and Cutting Dust Safety
Duey, make sure to use cutting fluid. It will do wonders for the longevity of your blade. For a hobby guy, would you guys just recommend a deep cut portable band saw? I've seen people make stands for these, so that could potentially be another project for me after I build the table. I've got a Dewa...

Re: Buying a Tig welder to use at home
Letting folks know what country you are in may help if you are comfortable with disclosing that information. I personally have a Miller maxstar 150STL, which means i cannot weld aluminum. That being said I love it and it allowed me to get my foot in the door, and to be honest not having aluminum cap...

Re: Welding solid 4140 Bar
Ya I understand your concern there. I took a quick skim in "design of welded structures" as well but I didn't see anything that was similar to this application. Maybe try to dig around looking for typical weldments or pre-qualified procedures for torsional loads. Maybe the groove 4 vs 2 do...

Re: Abrasive Grinding and Cutting Dust Safety
Sounds like you are taking PPE seriously which is a good thing. Make sure your respirator fits well, you shouldn't be able to smell anything for the most part. Keep your skin covered (which sounds like you are doing). To me it sounds like you are taking the right precautions and shouldn't be at majo...

Re: New to Stick Welding
On your practice piece try scribing or making some lines with soap stone. That might help you out and you can follow along the line. Once you get one straight bead, use that as your guide for the next bead and overlay the current weld half way over the last weld. 6011 slag kinda sucks to get off. Tr...

Re: Welding solid 4140 Bar
I would guess that beveling two sides would be best. That way you can have less starts and stops compared to 4 bevels. I would think a v-groove weld on two parallel opposing faces and potential backgrind of the second face? Not a pro, but that is what I'd look into. If you have "Metals and How ...

Re: Storing Welding Electrodes
If you are not doing code work it doesn't matter. Try to keep your lo-hydrogen rods in a sealed container, but if you go out and do something you deem critical, safety concern potential, or is a coded weld, get new rods. Of course there is also rebaking and rod ovens, but that is expensive if you ar...

Hah nice..
I was thinking along the lines of working with copper. With repeated bending and hammering the copper will crack unless periodically annealed. So something along the lines of will stainless work harden and crack while I am building the thing.
