Metallurgy is a complex subject. A book every welder should own is "Metals and How to Weld Them" by Lincoln Electric. Silly name but a great book covering welding/metallurgy. Not an engineering textbook, but technical enough to get a good understanding of metals and their properties.

What do you guys (and gals) think about converting a table saw for small stock steel cutting? I have an adjustable speed table saw (Shop Smith) and would use the 10" Diablo Demon ferrous blades with the miter fence and the saw dialed in to the correct RPM.

I acquired an old commercial sewing machine table with steel legs and a 1 1/2 thick butcher block top. I'm going to use some firebrick with a steel plate on top of the wood. While I'd love one of those perforated top tables, I can't justify the expense as a hobbyist.
