Re: Welding new cast iron parts, cracking after cooldown
That's a toughy the steel is cooling faster than the large cast peice I believe an oven may be needed or at least you could try packing it in sand or vermiculite and blankets to fill the air space

Re: Reducing Warpage: Tack Whole Project First?
On most things tacks will hold the entire thing together plenty strong infact alot of things get over welded and don't allow flex in some usees like a trailer or snow plow

Re: Reducing Warpage: Tack Whole Project First?
I'm a tack o holic !! Go in a little hot on the corners then start the completing weld just past the tack go back to the corner this builds some heat to blend then speed over to the start point with practice it makes even nicer welds because ....corners like to blow out if you end there due to heat ...

Re: Reducing Warpage: Tack Whole Project First?
I think of warp as heating a spot it expands but then is frozen in place controlled warp is what your after lots of tacks in opposing directions then short fast welds and time to cool the less structural ....example plate vs box tube .....the worse because force only has two directions on plate but ...

Build a few of these I made three sizes years ago 3x3 a 6x6 and this 12x12 I took extreme care and time to make them square and plumb on a known flat surface with a good square I can make a true 90 on most any length with four clamps then take the two L shapes and finish a perfect plumb level square...

I keep two blends 85/15 welds very clean short circuit and spray it's a nice Ballance for clean welds almost no spatter and also 95/4/1 for stainless it's supposed to be colder but I've sprayed it nearly spotless almost paint ready welds I've used high co2 blends but they tend to make a weld closer ...

Bed rails seem like a great idea but most are a spring steel blend so they can be light weight but strong stay away the welds will break unless cooled properly and they drill like work hardened steel

Re: Maybe you guys can help?
From a mechanic your done needs to be replaced at best welding it up it still should be removed or other gaskets will be screwed up the only hope is if you can drill down and tap a spot for a skinny Allen bolt beside the damage use no gaskets but ultra black ( urethane base ) let it cure 24 hours an...
