Re: TIG welding crack on 4130 chrome moly
Welding process wasn't specified. I didn't see a post weld HT. I used to deal pretty often with Harrison in Indiana. They repaired a lot of aircraft cylinders by welding. They had a number of 'In House' FAA approved procedures. They also had a number of 'Gentlemen Agreements ' with the FAA about wha...

Re: TIG welding crack on 4130 chrome moly
Just for kicks, I looked in an old copy of AC 43.13 Acceptable Methods of Aircrafr Alterations and Repair. The chapter on welding calls for ER 4130 when doing tubing repairs. That suprised me.

Re: Dusty looking tungsten
Yeah, but the tungsten oxidizing due to inadequate post flow shouldn't be turning their tungsten a "dusty brown". Sounds like there is some contamination going on there, also. I agree with you, but if there is long enough Post Flow, it should help keep the contamination from affecting the...

Re: Dusty looking tungsten
Post Flow does two things for you. One thing it does is provide inert gas coverage over the weld as it cools. You must hold the torch in place over the weld after the arc stops, for this to be effective. The second thing it does is protect your hot Tungsten from getting oxidized while it cools down....

Re: Single Knob/Button Controls, good/bad?
Neverlast 5 year warranty? Just ask yourself this, if it dies after 5 months, and they say the problem is you, not the welder, can you afford to loose your investment? I spent 3K for a welder that started crapping out at 18 months. Neverlast said the problem was high resistance caused by the Tungste...

Re: What rod? Clean 6061 to cast GM oil pan
For thin stuff, I agree with the 4047. However that cast Aluminum oil pan isn't what I consider thin. I have used both 4943 and 4047 on cast . For that job I would choose the 4943. It would be best to know what alloy the pan is made from. The amount of Silicon can have an effect on short cracking. I...

Re: online fastener sources
I prefer Fastenal for my smaller nuts and bolts. I tend to use SS over plain steel hardware, just because of how much I hate rust. I can buy bags of 50 or 100, at about the plain steel prices at 'hardware' stores. If I only need a few items of a given size, they won't break a bag, but will order the...

Re: Cast aluminum and what filler rods to use?
To really determine the correct filler, you need to know which alloy of aluminum was used for the casting. If Audi won't tell you what it is, you can have a lab analysis done. MONEY That area will have to be cleaned inside and out, to an almost surgical level. Then you can use Zyglo (best), or anoth...

Over a year ago, I posted a picture of PRACTICE beads on aluminum. Mostly to show Lt Badd my progress, and to thank him for his help. Practice bead pictures dont get judged here, by the same standard as actual WELDS. They get help, and constructive criticism. Sometimes, they even get good advice. Re...

It seems that they give pretty good support, till somewhere between 3 and 6 months on a new unit. After that, you seem to be on your own.
So much for the 5 year warranty.

Re: Problem with the Everlast 350EXT
How old is your unit? NEVERLAST was useless when I called them about my less than 2 year old 255EXT. It works so nice on DC, and is now so unstable on AC. According to them, my Tungsten is overheating and causing 'high resistance '. When I called BS on that, they said it was my Ground clamp. I hope ...

Re: welding table base, what wall thickness?
I would give serious thought to making it a 'bolt on' top, and maybe a bolt together frame too. I grew up as a military brat. It will be easier to make new friends at your new duty station, if you don't start out giving them sore backs and hernias. With proper design, it can be a solid feeling table...
