Re: Chrome plated mild steel - How to Approach Welding a Crack
Again, thank you CJ for the direction on this. Just to follow up.... This is the result of my lame attempt at welding this crack in chrome plated mild steel. As suggested, cut a slit in the crack & ground back as much chrome as I could.... but never could get it all. Nasty stuff when the chrome ...

Re: Chrome plated mild steel - How to Approach Welding a Crack
cj.... yeah, I think you're on the right / same page. That support arm carries the rear muffler (in the RED area (R)) and a portion of the front muffler (in the BLUE area (F)). The 2 standoffs are where the support arm bolts to the frame. 52 years of vibration has taken it's toll on the support arm....

Re: Chrome plated mild steel - How to Approach Welding a Crack
Thx for the direction cj.... ok, I'll grind the chrome back & just do it. The crack is all the way thru (not a surface blemish), and is right next to one standoff. Drilling probably not an option. Should work fine if I just do it, I think. You sure it’s chrome-plated mild steel? pretty sure. It ...

Chrome plated mild steel - How to Approach Welding a Crack
Background: round pipe, mild steel -- chrome plated. It's about 18" long, and is a mounting bracket for Harley exhaust pipes. I'll remove it tomorrow & get a better look at this crack ~ 1" diameter (maybe 3/4") ~ 1/8" wall thickness need to repair a crack around most of the d...

Thank you all for the comments / direction. I hope to pick up the package late this afternoon or tomorrow. We'll see what it "REALLY" consists of when it's in hand. Lol. I'd like to think I know my limitations but willing to push them. Some strategic tacks and clamping angle stock as chill...

Avoiding Distortion on 18" Aluminum Welds - how does one approach such a task
I'm arguably a novice welder, but I do ok doing aluminum welds 4"-5" or less in length. A friend asked me if I could do multiple 18" welds. This left me wondering how to approach such a task. Background: 1/8" aluminum plate - outside corner joint - 18" long welds think a box...

Re: 4943, cast aluminum, and hot short cracking
Funny, I live 20 miles from the town they invented 4943 in and its almost impossible to find in a quantity less than a pallet. If it helps, a google search turned up several sources for Hobart 4943 filler: ebay, cyberweld, bakersgas, weldfabulous, etc. Search for --> "494309470" or "...

Re: What is Best Practice to Bridge a Wide Gap
Just to close my question off. It's not pretty, ugly actually, but I got it done. I struggled closing the wide gap..... tried a few things, adding packing, added filler rod. In pretty much every case the packing or rod would melt first and not meld into the base material. Eventually, after multiple ...

Re: What is Best Practice to Bridge a Wide Gap
I like the idea of the "filler/packing" approach. I can do that..... so will practice that first & work on my tacks & welding it out, using scrap pieces. Admittedly, the jury was out on the "gussets" idea. In my mind, I wasn't sure if gussets would be needed.... but thank...

What is Best Practice to Bridge a Wide Gap
Warning - question from rookie, wanna be welder...... but I learned long ago that a wide gap is a disaster waiting to happen. So here I am. Situation: 1 1/2" square aluminum, WITH rounded corners - 1/8" wall thickness when doing a 90 degree joint, 2 of 4 edges fit flush, the other 2 edges ...

FWIW, just a heads up on the gas in the Toronto area. 330 cu ft argon tank - (aka Size 50 or 9.33 cu M) - deposit $250 + yearly lease $70 + $100 each refill/exchange + 13% taxes = $475 CDN for your first bottle. It's heavy as hell. Use a truck if you plan to transport it yourself. lol. You can cheap...

Re: How to Use a Large SD Memory Card in your Miller Dynasty
This is a step by step process to create a useable SD Card for use in your Miller Dynasty. No doubt, there are other options but this is what I tested: ** Note.... if you're not familiar with how to re-partition a disk drive (the SD Card emulates a hard drive) this step may be problematic for you. I...

Pictured below is what I actually tested with.
The Anker SD reader and SanDisk SD Reader / Cards all worked ok.
I suspect most SD Card readers or adapters would work.

I might be wrong, but the weld looks to me like the A/C Balance is out of wack.... aka backwards. Bottom right knob (in pic)..... currently set to ~70% suggesting about 70% cleaning action or DCEP=70% DCEN=30%. I'd suggest flip / flop the knob to 30% or DCEP=30% DCEN=70% and continue troubleshooting...

Do I dare ask...... what are you using for a respirator at home ? Blasting outside with "sand" is nasty.... the dust is nasty stuff. At a minimum, you'll want a rock solid respirator. Spend more on your respirator. Skimp on the respirator, & fast forward 25 years.... be prepared for th...

I thought I understood the math behind "pulsing" until I saw the equation in the diagram..... my interpretation of the diagram's equation goes something like: Average AMPS = ( (MAX "Dialed" Amps x % On Time) + (Pulse Base AMPs x (100% - % On Time) ) / 200 What puzzles me, why the...

I'm somewhat familiar with Harley Davidson's aluminum cases from '70s era Sporsters...... where it is common practice to add a re-inforcement ring around the countershaft bearing. 3M 6300 Respirator Fitment under new helmets...any problems?
I'm trying to research new helmets. I currently wear a 3M 6300 series respirator with the 2097 pancake filters under my older Lincoln Vista 3000 helmet. The area under my current helmet is quite confined with the respirator + prescription eye glasses. a.k.a. it works but things are jammed in there p...

Re: Auto Darkening in Colder Temps - what helmets measure up
Nothing definitive yet. But after a few more trials on 20F days, I can say my Lincoln Vista 3000 hasn't flashed me provided it sits inside (where it's warm) overnight. So it seems there IS something to where it spends its down time. No more nights in a cold garage for it. I still plan on looking at ...

Auto Darkening in Colder Temps - what helmets measure up ?
Background To my dis-pleasure, my 10 yr old Lincoln Vista 3000 helmet, is choosing to randomly and unpredictably flash me. To be clear, I strike a TIG arc on carbon steel, generally my helmet darkens immediately, then 5-30 seconds into the weld it reverts back to normal.... often times, it then jum...
