Pot Metal Repairing a Keepsake

I have a license plate frame that has broken. It appears to be a zinc alloy pot metal type material. It is a Boston Red Sox frame that my wife gave to her best friend about twenty years ago. My wife passed away 10 years ago when my two daughters were 5 and 7 years old and this is a keep sake for her...

Re: New use for old 7018 rods

I should probably add I’m not trying to be a nit picky ass. I just want people to be aware that once you knock of the flux from a rod it no longer is garanteed that it has even remotely similar properties. It may be a fine practice for a given application! But it’s not a recognized, or acceptable m...

Re: Union Carbide HW 26 HeliArc Torch

Thanks, so an XX26 is a 26 and they all have the same physical properties, ie: collet bodies, etc.

Re: New use for old 7018 rods

I believe the rod in the center of a 6010 and a 7018 are both the same grade of mild steel. The difference is in the flux. If your knocking off the flux then your just oxy welding with mild steel filler. They differ slightly: https://www.norco-inc.com/ASSETS/DOCUMENTS/ITEMS/EN/SOW-09360105PP-SpecSh...

Re: Victor regulator pressure modification

Glad you got a reply - shows commitment to customers - I did think it would only be a spring change - but do make sure your dealing with a dual stage ( not to be confused with a dual gauge ) regulator or your wasting your time - be interested if you go ahead to hear your results. Spoke with Mr. Jim...

Re: New use for old 7018 rods

One thing to bear in mind, brazing is not welding. With brazing, you’re not getting the parent metal hot enough to fuse the filler and parent metal together, only hot enough to melt the filler. 7018 rods need heat to fuse properly for adequate strength. Now, if you’re just knocking about and doing ...

I don't think they would work very well for TIG, due to incompatible metallurgy.

Re: Victor regulator pressure modification

Not sure if this would be useful info for anyone here, but I got a quick response from www.regulatortorchrepair.com. Victor design, durability and versatility makes them worth the price IMHO. They wrote: Thank you for contacting us regarding Victor SR450. According to the parts breakdown, Victor doe...

New use for old 7018 rods

6011.JPG I was playing around with my OA rig the other day. Decided to strip off the flux on a couple different rods and use them as filler on my OA. I pound them on the anvil with a hammer to loosen the flux then remove the rest with sandpaper. The cellulose rods can be soaked in water to remove f...

Re: Welding helmet reviews

Does the inner lens get covered up by the welding smoke on the Vulcan. Take a look at the picture of my helmet. Just ordered a new set of replacement plastic lenses. The frame that holds the outer plastic lens is junk, one you manage to remove it, the clips break, piece of crap design. I just use 3x...

Victor regulator pressure modification

I have a Victor SR 450D oxygen regulator. They make this model in an A through E model: The A-B-C-D-E after a Victor model number refers to the delivery pressure of the regulator. A=15psi, B=40psi, C=80psi, D=120 psi, and E=225psi Unless otherwise stated in the description of repair kit, each Victor...

Union Carbide HW 26 HeliArc Torch

I have an old Union Carbide Heli Arc torch Model # "HW 26" that was given to me. I have researched the wide variety of cup options (a lot to choose from) and I am in the process of ordering lenses, collets etc. Most all torch descriptions are for a WP 26. What does the prefix "WP"...

Welding helmet reviews

Having watched the many youtube auto helmet reviews they never bring up what I find to be the most important point. Keeping the lenses clean. I tend to keep my face "in the weld" so I can keenly watch the puddle. (Getting old and half blind, I have to wear 3.0 cheaters!) LOL. That being sa...

Re: Victor 300 series welding torch tip prices

Thanks for the reply, 100 series torch bodies seem to be reasonably priced as are the welding tips. The body being smaller is probably better balanced, and easier on the hands, coupled with 3/16 hose I think this setup would be much easier to use than the 300 series body with 1/4 inch hose. I am alw...

Victor 300 series welding torch tip prices

Victor welding tips are a premium item, priced from $40 to $60 dollars. I found some on eBay from "Welding City" for about 10 bucks each.. Has anyone had any experience with this product. I do small hobby/automotive projects. https://www.ebay.com/itm/WeldingCity-Acetylene-Welding-Nozzle-He...

Simple Intro

I am a semi retired captain, fix a lot of marine related equipment and just about anything else that comes my way. Welding is ...
