Doesn't it depend on the welder? If your running lift arc or scratch start I can see a rheostat being necessary, but if it's a TIG welder with a remote input then is usually just a pot. I know my Lincoln 355 uses a 10K pot, but I think Millers may use different ohm rating. Then you just have to fig...

Looks like a good start! Tapering off when terminating the weld will help to avoid a crater at the end.

For anyone having the same issue in the future, the problem was the orifice still had a bunch of soot/junk in it after I tried blowing it out. A backfire is from lack of fuel and without pulling orifice out it couldn't be cleaned good enough to provide adequate flow. Thanks to those that tried helpi...

Hope it's okay to post this being that there's no welding on it, but I'm really happy with it and thought some guys might like it. Added pocket clip to 5" Knipex plier wrench.

Personally I think its easier to see in a dark environment and let the weld light up the work. Also gas lens and pyrex cup helps too as pointed out before.

Well installed new o-rings and still no luck. Flame immediately backfires and burns for a few seconds at base of tube where the holes that introduce air are. I guess I'll call Smith on Monday.

Can anyone help me with the fitting question?

Backfire- I have a Smith NE-180A soldering torch. First thing I disassembled it and blew it out with air, nothing looked damaged or out of place. The only tip it had was the installed largest offered #4. When I lite the torch it immediately had a 2-3 second sustained backfire that self extinguished....
