Re: Voltage, Wire Feed Speed, Oh My!!!
If your settings aren't right on thin material (say 1/16" or 1.6 mm) then you'll have too much heat and you'll blow holes. If they aren't right on thicker material (say 3/8" or 10mm) then you won't have enough heat and the weld material will just stick on the surface rather than combine, i...

Re: Split bead fillet welds.
Thanks mike. Good info. I'll definitely investigate further. It's a bit odd what's happening. Again today I was able to do some welds, usually the easy ones out in the open, with no problem at all, while other spots, in horrible positions underneath, upside down with your head under your armpit, wer...

Re: Split bead fillet welds.
Just my 1/2 cents worth. I have found that if they're dental floats they may be "Stainless Steel",and a Chromoly rod with a wooden handle. Without knowing exactly I have brazed them in the past. Just making ranch work Work. Good luck. Cultural language translation problem here. In the Sta...

Re: Split bead fillet welds.
Thanks for your input. Answers. P308, No. The weld deposit is separating quite evenly between both sides of the weld and not favouring the side directly connected to the earth / work clamp. The wire direction is at play here but there isn't a "middle spot" if you understand what I'm saying...

Split bead fillet welds.
In the thread about the MIG part 3 video (Wire speed / voltage setting of unknown welder parameters) I posted this comment about using a particular welder. "When I used the Cigweld 150 Mig, for about 1" the weld wire refused to push into the corner, instead laying separate beads along the ...

Re: Stressed welds
There probably is penetration. Under the weld on the parent metal piece that still has the weld metal attached. If the gun angle and wire direction deliver all of the arc force to only one side of the join, it will only weld to that piece. The edge of the puddle will only just pick up the corner of ...

Re: Proprietary Plugs
Well Coldman, You'll be glad to know that good old JB Weld from Jaycar Electronics has done the job once again. I glued it back together yesterday but was worried about the stress point of the main pedal return spring, which isn't far short of a kid's trampoline spring. Fortunately, it must direct i...

Re: Do electrodes "go off"
Thanks. "Going off" is a term used to describe several things down here. If the surf is pumping it is "going off". Sometimes the fishing will be "going off". "Going off like a bucket of prawns in the sun" means something is turning bad very rapidly. Meat can &...

Do electrodes "go off"
I'm wondering if stick welding electrodes go off with age if they are still in their sealed packets. I have an opportunity to purchase nearly 100 kg of sticks for a very cheap price. Mostly new old stock (NOS) in sealed packets. Cigweld Weldcraft mainly and a few other boxes of different stuff. I've...

Re: WT&T Basic MIG Part 3
That's what I was using. I can see why it would now thinking about it. Droplets of liquid magnetic material floating around in a magnetic field. Doh!!! But unusual that it really only seemed to affect the weld of 1 out of 3 welders. Or at least it really gave that one a nudge where the...

Re: WT&T Basic MIG Part 3
That is assuming you know the manufacturer. Two rolls of wire I have obtained with a welder appear to be "generically" labelled. I'll have to take a closer look. I can't say I've ever used, or even seen, standard polarity fluxcore wire, even though I've heard of its existence. A strange th...

Re: Stressed welds
I don't think they are stressed welds. Looks to me like the paint held it together for a while. It reminds me of something. I paid a trailer business good money to fix a boat trailer for me a few years back as I was too busy at the time to do it myself. Within 12 months I had to re-weld every thing ...

Re: WT&T Basic MIG Part 3
I agree with you in principle, if this were an exacting procedure and method. However, the original premise is not a precision operation from the outset. Based on the idea of approximately 1amp per thou of material thickness and then a multiplier based on wire diameter gives only a calculated approx...

Re: WT&T Basic MIG Part 3
So you mean that I'd need to know the outer and inner diameter (sheath thickness) so that I can work out the cross-sectional area of the steel, sheath only? The other thing to do would be to accurately weigh a set lengths of wire for the different wires. If the length of wire were long enough or you...

Re: WT&T Basic MIG Part 3
Thank you for your answers but you are missing the point of my line of questioning. The welding machine in question has no data, not tables and no real guidelines for settings in the user manual. This is why I looked at this method to determine settings for this particular machine. This scenario is ...

Re: WT&T Basic MIG Part 3
Thanks for the reply P308. I understand all of that. 0.030" (0.8mm) solid wire will put down more metal than hollow flux core of the same diameter. I guess I didn't ask the question very well. The table in Mig Welding Basics Part 3 uses calculation factors of 3.5 " / amp for 0.023" wi...

Both good points. Well worth noting.Poland308 wrote:Just beware cleanup of nonstick cooking sprays before painting requires serious cleaning and extra work before painting. As well there not engineered to not compromise a weld, IE they may contain things that will change the resulting weld.

Re: WT&T Basic MIG Part 3
I did quickly try it out on the crappy Toolex welder yesterday and the result was that I had to use the highest voltage / lowest wire feed setting suggested by the table. Dropping the voltage back and upping the feed just didn't like it at all. I had some 2.75mm / 0.110" material and using 0.8 ...

No worries. Thanks anyway.
Out of interest, what would you want for it? I could probably buy the plug and rewire the end of the cable or make a short patch to run from 7 female to 8 male.

Re: Lincoln Electric anti-splatter spray
I'm can't remember where I read it, but recently did somewhere, that as good as any other spray anti spatter is supermarket spray cooking oil. Couple of $ a can. I've never tried it but it might smell like frying potato chips to go with your catfish.
