Re: Tig drills ?
Since you don't have to invest in a machine, try out different size, types of collets, gas lenses, stubby kits, types of tungsten etc. Start building a personnel serious torch kit. A small change on the torch can change a impossible to weld joint to merely difficult. Admire the ambition to use the lunch...

Re: Tig drills ?
That's a sweet deal you have going there, I'd suggest starting with flat plate and running beads. Maybe use 2 or 3 plates so they don't get too hot, you'll notice the difference between a cold and hot plate. Also you can use 1/8" sheet and do lap and tee joints. Thanks ,I know about the using ...

Re: Splitting tungsten on AC
Breaking off the tungsten end with pliers/dykes, etc.; prior to point grinding, is a great way to induce tight fracturing down the length. Grinding off the used end with cutoff wheel, etc. doesn't do that. Yes ! I split the tungsten numerous times by breaking it .I use a cut off now .No more spitti...

Hit it with a hard stone and try again, and the difference (even with poor steel) should be significant.
