Re: Argon tank empty??

1 scf of Argon weighs .1034 lb. A 300 cf bottle of Argon full weighs a hair over 31lb more when it’s full compared to dead empty. Wow over 30lbs difference huh? I plugged it into a gas volume to weight calculator and got the same result, I always just figured the things felt heavier on the trip bac...

Yep manual needed, I concur with both posters above as to what it most likely means, but it's definitely a question id want to see the manual to be sure of my guess.

Honestly seeing your setup and that you know what to expect when it grabs or bites, I don't honestly see it as that crazy or dangerous, hell, If I was at your shop I'd grab that over the countless other grinders without a guard or handle to be found and a standard cutoff disc. Honestly I'm pretty su...

I could've been an EE if I hadn't became a welder instead so I'm not either, but I have at least an elementary understanding of both due to it, and you're right, that is one HELL of a heat sink setup. It makes sense though, the better you can dissipate heat the smaller you can pack it, and the harde...

Re: Tungsten's for Aluminum Tig Welding Alustar by Wolfram

We used nothing but Alumapower 350s and push pull guns when I worked at the jet boat shop as well. Good god is that some thick aluminum to weld, but we used it for the exact same reason, when you had several spools of wire going into welding hundreds and hundreds of not thousands of feet on 3/8"...

Yup, I agree. A few here and there have tested additional inductance and it seems to definitely help. Peeking into the front vent I can see a decent sized toroid with good sized wire wrapped around it. I should take it apart and have a better look inside. I also agree on the 5P/5P+. Böhler comes in...

I agree that wearing sun screen is sort of like removing the smoke detectors to take care of that annoying beeping from all the strange smoke filling the room, while getting minor UV burns on part of your face doesn't mean your eyes are in line to receive the same level of exposure, it's a lot bette...

Steel is ungodly expensive right now, but based the options you're considering you're wanting to do it right, so I'll just mention some thoughts, regardless of if it's home built, pre purchased etc, you want your welding table to essentially be flat as possible, even if it's got a minor enough bow y...

You're collecting enough machines it's only fair you start sending them out on vacations for others to play with for a little while ;). Any toaster welder that'll even keep any brand of 6010 lit the entire rod at all let alone let you whip and such without worry still impresses me, not to mention th...

You know at the old aluminum shop I worked at they knew a guy who had a blade set up on a grinder like that and was cutting something up near his face with no handle on or anything, kicked back, pretty much bisected his face supposedly. Honestly, though, assuming you have a handle on the grinder, I'...

All this talk of compressors is making me regret not getting at least a 60 gallon 240V when I had the chance , oh well, not like I'll be gouging with my tig machine or buying 1.5HP air grinders anyway.

Re: Tungsten's for Aluminum Tig Welding Alustar by Wolfram

I'm somewhat intrigued, they're rather expensive for being half the length of a standard piece of tungsten, a good $10-15 over a decent reputable brand pack of 2% lanthanated from CK worldwide, Miller etc. Though not nearly as comparatively high when compared to Wolfram 2% lanthanated. I've never se...

Re: Stel S300 on a 400V, 3-phase up-converting transformer

I've also read about gouging being "hard" on machines, but call me naive, I don't think that gouging (arc) is the root cause of the problem. I currently feel like the root cause of tiring-out welding machines by using them for air arc gouging is simply because it requires so much amperage...

Jesus, even if you're exaggerated substantially, moving so much air you pull 8oz of water out of the air just from a short period grinding, that's a LOT of air moving. Yeah, I honestly don't know where all the water would go, a refrigerated drier would still have to dump gallons of water a day SOMEW...

Re: Is 240v necessary to weld 3/16” carbon steel to my truck frame?

Yeah, unless you x-ray or break it you'll never know for sure. It's why when I'm going to do an important weld, especially in a rare situation where I only have 120v, I do a couple break tests and a cut and etch using similar settings and joint configuration as I'll be using later. Eventually you'll...

What size is your compressor tank . I actually keep my cubitron backer and discs on my little 7 amp grinder because it's so much more compact and easier to maintain a light touch with, they're probably the only abrasive I've used that actually lived up to/exceeded marketing hype, yeah, you ca...

Anyone who works with aluminum, or rather cuts/grinds it every day will probably be well prepared for the possibility, but I could see you getting a kickback from hell using this thing, not exactly the kind of tool I'd be willing to use on a grinder without a handle and guard available. Well, I can tell you what the issue is, how to fix it, might be a bit more tricky, you need to adjust your spark gap, as I cannot find a manual anywhere online, the most info I can find is it was made by thermal arc and this thread. https://weldtalk.hobartwelders.com/forum/equipment-talk/tig-welders...

Interesting, I have no arc gouging experience but it certainly didn't look inconsistent like it was struggling. Did you get this machine to spare your HTP Invertig 400 the abuse from arc gouging? Or did you just want to see if a dedicated stick/gouging focused machine would stick weld better than th...

Hehehe, yes, like Oscar and others said, here's the secret to tack welds, set the machine to max and stomp that pedal for a second, if it's too thin, just hold off a touch from flooring it totally, if you try to creep up on it 9/10 times it'll inevitably start to all melt away from each other just l...

Re: MIG with Voltage and Current adjustment but no wire speed?

Industrial grade units will go above 30V all day long, run even some .045 dual shield or .045 spray arc at the top of the charts and you'll be at or near 30V with that, now make that .052, 1/16 wire etc and you'll easily be over 30 volts if you're going for maximum deposition on thick steel. The XMT...

Hm, I'd say it depends more on the single pass aspect and if you're talking mig or flux core that might challenge it's ability to weld 3/16. However, to answer your question, ABSOLUTELY, provided you've got it cranked to the max are using flux core wire and running on a greater than 20 amp breaker, ...

Honestly, while it might sound backwards this whole thing has me considering selling MY welding table, its too big to likely take with me where I'll be going next until I can rent a house with a garage, and it's kind of a awkward size where it's more than enough for practicing welding coupons, or do...
