Wow!
Thanks, that is a relief to know what the problem is.
I will get some straight pure Argon.

Re: Aluminium tig beginner
The EP and EN are definitely the right way round. I checked. I changed the insulator to the one supplied with the gas lens. It gives a good gas tight seal round the lens body. Gas quality is possibly an issue I have no way to check. The bottle is nearly empty. I have used up lots of gas trying to ge...

Re: Aluminium tig beginner
I live in North Devon. I am going to try and get one of the local engineering firms to come over and see what is wrong. Hopefully also provide me with a half day lesson. As I am a retired electronic engineer that is only a hobby welder I am not threat to anyone's income stream. I have confused some ...

Re: Aluminium tig beginner
Thanks for the input. I am able to weld steel perfectly with this set up. The torch and welder are brand new. I only have the one gas bottle and no access to another. It comes from BOC the most reputable gas supplier in the UK. I have tried 4 very different pieces of Aluminium stock and they all loo...

Re: Aluminium tig beginner
I have now tried 4 different types of Aluminium and it all looks the same. I have double checked every setting and checked that gas is arriving at the torch. I have tried both 1.6 mm and 2.4 mm (grey) ceriated Tungstens. The only variable left is the Tungsten. I have ordered some lanthanated tungste...

Re: Aluminium tig beginner
The welds are just passes with the torch no filler. I am sure the aluminium is not anodised. There is definitely gas flow but I have no way to measure it at the torch. 7 l/m is approx 15 cfh The aluminium stock was given to me by an engineering shop to practice with. I have also tried 120 A but it l...

Re: Aluminium tig beginner
Thanks to everyone for their input. Unfortunately I still have the same problem. I just cannot get a clean puddle to start with. I now have a new sophisticated welder r-tech digital 170 with a pedal and 4 different ac waveforms and frequency control. However my welds look just the same what ever I d...

Re: Aluminium tig beginner
Thank you for the advice. There is no foot pedal with the device. The material is 2 mm thick. I am melting the material right through. I have tried 15 l/m and a 6 cup. The result is better but still not like any of the videos I have seen. I definitely have the torch and earth cable the correct way r...

Aluminium tig beginner
I am a beginner at welding. I have managed some ok welds in steel but cannot even get started with aluminium. I have a basic AC/DC 200ST IGBT made by Stahlwerk I cannot manage to strike a stable arc and get a weld pool. I have a 2.4mm 2% Ceriated Tungsten (grey) I have tried current ranging from 34A...
