Yet another welding table!
Dang, there's some busy bee's on this forum as of late. I almost can't keep up with new threads/posts! It's like a gust of fresh air when you open the shop doors! Lots of projects recently from professional repair, to serious DIY hobby type stuff, and everything in between. I wonder why this place ...

Re: Yet another welding table!
Nice sturdy frame. What are you using for a top? Sent from my SM-G970W using Tapatalk I had a piece of 3/8” plate waterjet cut. Amazingly square edges (which is what I was looking for) https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/b7269b67dfb0a6902cc5729fbb7f157f.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20...

Re: TIG welding table at work
I thought some of you might appreciate the TIG table we have at where I work, that's a 4 foot by 12 foot slab of 1/2" thick 6061-T6 aluminum. Funnily enough 80-90% of our welding is done with using AlumaPower 350s and push pull guns which are at the other end of the building. And yes, the tabl...

Yet another welding table!
Picked up some 3” x 1/8” wall square tube and some 1”x2” rectangular tube for my welding table base. Still need casters. Getting better with my welding. Practice does indeed make a difference! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/4868d57526cdf42fbcfe33f291cb3f7d.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn...

Thanks @sbaker, @bughunter, @polnad308 and @spartan
Excellent advice all around.
I'm working on my welding table so that will also help me with a better practice setup.

Re: PrimeWeld TIG 225 adventure begins
That is true because the bottles swapped have their stamp on them. They are responsible for the DOT certs, not you. That makes sense to me. These are my two bottles, black is C25, grey is oxy. The grey one is what I was given by Barry Hamel when I took in the empty oxy that I bought from a local we...

Interesting.
I can buy up to a 300 cu ft tank here. When I go to get a fill, they just exchange it so I never worry about getting it re-certified.

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
I'm completely with you guys on the thinner stock and how the prepackaged coupons that use it are a bad choice for beginners especially when attempting to pad beads, it'll end up a warped mess before you know it and when half the plate is glowing after a few passes it'll scale over. I honestly thin...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
I’ve got a 14” sq chunk of 1/4” plate that’s warped and quite pitted. I’m going to clean it up and start padding some beads. A warped piece of steel actually makes for another type of practice; taking the warpage out with welding beads. Welding on steel warps and distorts, especially large plate. K...

Looks good to me!
I have to get a refill on my propane. Maybe I can get that done today and give it a go. I have a #10 heating head.

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
Thanks Spartan, I think I need to get more hood time on thicker stock. Currently I’m using 1/8” with 1/16 filler. I think there is tremendous value in practicing on larger and thicker stock. Check your local scrap yards. To me, it's a bit regrettable that so many firms are advertising these 6"...

Re: Machinist Forums
Practical Machinist is horrible. It's like a lunatic asylum where the patients have valuable information you may be able to pry out of them by humoring them. Get in, ask your question, pretend you don't see the insults, thank them, and get out. Lots of jerks and bullies. People defend them because ...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
As a TIG newbie I’m trying to learn as much as I can. One of the challenges I face is moving too slow. Videos tend to be sped up so getting a real sense of speed and timing is hard. @spartan not sure what the right terminology is but how quick are you moving on the welds? I try to move absolutely a...

The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
Personally I find when I’m moving too fast there is too much filler/tungsten interaction.Oscar wrote: Do you find that moving fast leaves too sharp of a tail/teardrop at the rear of the puddle?

Transformer stand. Apparently one transformer will slide underneath and another will sit on top. About 43" tall. 2" square tubing, 11ga wall. 1/4" thick plate for the top. Asked the customer if they would like to save some money if I could re-use some old jig plates for the top, and ...

Re: Which Regulator for Propane?
Tried the acetylene tip. Does this look right? I read you can clamp a piece of metal around it to shield the flame for propane. Guess I'm an expert now. If any of you kids need tutoring, I am here to help. 09 22 20 acetylene heating tip running propane unmodified small.jpg That’s looking like a fla...

Re: Which Regulator for Propane?
Definitely not cheap.
I priced out what it would cost to get the "proper" propane tips for my torches and I was looking at near $500. That's a heck of a lot of acetylene!!!

Re: Which Regulator for Propane?
Help! I can't figure out what size heating tip I need. The acetylene tip included with the kit is size 8. I want to be able to bend stuff and heat cast iron parts prior to welding. Right now, I have a 15"-wide piece of 1/4" plate, and I want to heat it red hot so my finger brake will bend...

Re: Which Regulator for Propane?
Now I'm reading I can use the acetylene regulator after all. I connected it to the tank with an adaptor. I have a Victor CA2460 torch body. Looking to see what kind of propane stuff I need on the end of it. Sadly, a mouse made a home in the coiled hose before I took it out of the box, so now it sme...

Yeah, just as an FWIW Spartan, I couldn't recommend practical machinist either. For the reasons others have stated; I won't repeat. Hobby machinist is a great forum though and has my recommendation. I realize that I'm responding a bit after-the-fact, but ... hope it helps. Do you use the same handl...
