Re: Plasma Cutter vs Cold Saw

Hey guys, I need to cut some 50mm (2” for those of you who are stuck in the past) bar stock and the guy at the metal merchant and ended up giving me an off cut which was a bit longer than I asked, he did ask if it was alright because “I hate cutting that stuff” Am I going to wreck my cold saw blade ...

Re: Building a fixture table

I tried it, it got rid of the burr really well, but the tube still doesn’t fit, I’m thing it’s warped from factory because there is minimal welding to it, I might try the belt sander coz I won’t really want to go the next size tube down for the Inner, it’s 5mm smaller Sent from my iPhone using Tapat...

Re: Building a fixture table

Yeh that’s kind of my problem but my tube is 1800mm long so I can’t get anything down to deberr, which is why I tried smashing the inner tube down with the sledge hammer. the other issue is the outer tube was factory seconds and isn’t folded completely square where the seam is, which is why I was go...

Re: Building a fixture table

Hey guys, I’m in need of a bit of advice, in the end of my fixture table I wanted to make a slide out fence so I can extend the table out further or drop in some Timber to try and double it as a table saw or plasma table etc. I bought some steel which sleeves my shs and I can get it to slide in abou...

Re: How Bad Does a Flash Have to be to Cause Problems?

Mate you will be fine, when I was 18 I started arc welding, didn’t have a clue about it, I was welding outside and due to all the light I couldn’t tell that i could see thru the shield and gave up with it, tosses it aside and put sunnies on and welded for about an hour all up, went to bed and 3am st...

Re: Building a fixture table

A 1/4” (6mm) tip is sufficient for a fixture and welding table. You will only get so much accuracy and flatness out of it due to a lack of rigidity. No big deal if you’re a hobbyist. I prefer 16mm holes. More options for tooling, clamps, and spacers. I wasn’t worried about rigidity too much, I’ve g...

Building a fixture table

Thanks Dudley they look good but might get costly over 70 holes. I was toying with pilot drilling all my holes, cutting up 30mm bar stock and welding it under the table where my holes are going to go and then drill and tap Coleman I’m only a a hobbyist and have a low budget for this stuff, the 6mm t...

Building a fixture table

This might seem like an open ended question, I’m building a fixture table, what do people prefer, to use tapped holes and bolts in the top or tight fitting pins? My problem is i cheaped out and only have a 6mm top and I’m worried that if I thread the holes it will only have a couple of theads at tha...

Re: Plasma Cutter vs Cold Saw

Yeh I’ll defiantly have to look into a wax stick, my local store is out of them which is why I haven’t used it. As for liquid coolant/lubricant, saws that use this are built different, they have the motor mounted separately from motor and have the blade powered by a drive shaft to seperate electrica...

Re: PPE

I’ve worked at places that have banned 1mm cutting discs for this reason. I’ve found that it happens for two reasons, either using a cutting disc for grinding which it isn’t designed to be pushed on sideways or the disc is damaged before you even start, I always flex my discs before putting them on,...

Re: Plasma Cutter vs Cold Saw

Ah sorry guys, I’ve gone against the pack, the bandsaw was just too big for me to keep anywhere, I’ve decided on this cold saw https://www.bunnings.com.au/bosch-blue-2000w-metal-cut-off-saw-gcd-12-jl_p0078011 I’ve got to save a bit more but I’m looking toward to it Thanks for the advice guys Sent fr...

Re: Plasma Cutter vs Cold Saw

I have a pretty nice sta-rite saw in my shop and going from memory I think I have replaced the blade twice since 2011. One replacement was when I allowed a friend of mine to bring a whole bunch of schedule 40 stainless steel tubing and cut it. I knew it did not stand a chance cutting all that tubin...

Re: Plasma Cutter vs Cold Saw

Hey guys, I’ve been looking into cutoff saws, already pretty sure I’d go a cold cutoff instead of abrasive, the only thing I haven’t ruled out is a drop bandsaw, does anyone have an opinion on them? The cold saw I’ve been looking at is $750aud and the metal band saw is only $500aud. The only thing I...

What welder to buy

I’m going to add chain links either side of the welder so I can strap it down so when I’m going all terrain it doesn’t flop around and going to box around the bottle so it can’t slide out, apart from that the wheels and axle was off an old p handled trolly, the sheet metal I had laying around from m...

Re: What welder to buy

I’ve only got one where my shed is a mess. So be gentle. I’ll have to build a shelf for the peddle, it’s a lot more bulky than I expected and it didn’t arrive until I finished.

Re: What welder to buy

It’s been a while since I’ve updated, I’ve made a welding cart to hold my welder and put a set of drawers under it for welding consumables, I’ve tried the tig out on mild steel and I love it. At first I couldn’t figure out why I was blowing through tungstons but it was because I had the torch on the...
